I'm a novice builder with only a few rigs under my belt. I'm not really good at picking parts so i had a list made for me but before I make my final purchase I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions before I went ahead and took the plunge. The computer will be used to import videos from my camera that I use to shoot 45 minute instructional videos for math tutoring. My son will also be using the computer to play Steam games, Minecraft, Sim City, and a few other games that I cant remember. My budget is $800. P

Drop the Z87 and go for H97, everything else is fine

get the crucial crucial mx100 for 80$. will be more reliable, faster, and last longer than the your pny xlr8. You could also drop the cpu to a core i3-4130 cpu or i3-4150 which should do perform well and it costs 70$ less. It will still get good fps with games since you have a good graphics card.also id choose the cpu that is most compatible with motherboard as they cost about the same

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

@IhaveDaBestPC: Do you have a recommendation for a replacement mobo with the H97 chipset or will anything do? Are there any manufacturers that I should avoid?

@iceblitzed: I have decided to follow your advice and switch to the crucial mx100. Thanks for the recommendation! I was iffy about what cpu to choose, i could spend a little more for a different cpu but i didnt know what would give me more bang for my buck. Would i see a huge jump in performance by splurging for an i7 processor instead? Would you recommend that?

Anyone else's advice on all my previous questions are still welcomed too! I'm a rookie so I need all the advice and guidance I can get.

i dont think an i7 would be worth the price for the performance increase for what your going to use it for. I think for now that the i3-4130 or 4150 would be a good value. I was thinking that you could get a H97 mobo which will be compatible with 5th gen intel cpu which are coming in less than a year I suppose and save the money for a new gen cpu. i5 would be the max I would go though
