After getting a new gpu and psu I come to find out that my mobo will not work with my new gpu. My specs that I think you will need are as follows intel i7 2600 the gpu I want to use is a xfx double D r9 280x.
My questions are, what do I need to look for to know if my mobo will work with this for sure, and how can I tell if it will be good for my specific build. I dont want to go with the absolute cheapest thing I can find nor do I want to pay for a ton of extra things I dont need. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The only thing special I want with the new motherboard I choose is crossfire. I am going to eventually get a second gpu.

I cannot think of an LGA 1155 MB that would not be compatible with that card... or any other PCIe X16 card. I suspect you had other issues.

From my own research I did so far I am figuring that the problem is from a dell motherboard with no recent bios updates. Last one is from 2011. My pc right now is an xps 8300.
