Hello there everybody,

So a few days ago I began to work on parting a computer build for 3D CAD work utilizing inventor and CFD analysis including fluent. After some painstaking research and trying to wrap my head around everything, I have a list I would like your opinions on. If there are questions in regards to my choices, ask up. I just picked based on what I have read online for running CAD packages and light duty gaming on the side, if ever.

Assemblies will be varied, with capabilities for over 100 parts or more. CFD analysis will be large as well, not sure on cell counts but I imaging they will be extensive. Analysis of a land speed record motorcycle is in my near future for thesis work.

So here we go:

CPU:
First choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: AutoCAD is a utilizes single threads in processing, so better to have speed then multiple cores.
Second choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Seemed to be a decent deal, but the processor may be overkill.

Motherboard:
First choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Second choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: 2 sets for 16g, latency is low, and as i understand it, DDR3 at 1600 should be sufficient, better to have more space then speed

GPU:
First Choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: recommended by autodesk site and large RAM for rendering support
Second Choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: not recommended but seems very similar for a good bit less cash.
Third Choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: Cheaper, but half the RAM

Hard drive:
SSD for boot up and frequent use files:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Mechanical for backups:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Disk Burner:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reason: Seems to have plenty of cooling and HDMI ports

Power Supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Reasoning: Platinum level performance, believe 550W is more then enough power, and a modular supply seems logical

Cooling Fan/Heat sink:
Option 1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Cheap but simple and low profile
Option 2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Best reputation around it seams, but higher price and I worry about fitment

Monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
2 monitors capable of connecting with GPU, optional at this point.

Please let me know if you believe much of this is overkill, or if you would recommend differing products. I intend to run windows 7 64 bit. I also worry about connectivity of the components or if I am missing any key cables or connectors. I want to do this on a budget of about 1500 or so, preferably less. Just don't want to rush in and make mistakes.

Thanks for the time

So why go with the quad core?
Why ATI instead of Nvidea? this a preference thing?
Why the case change?
Whats the reasoning behind the motherboard?
Why go with the smaller SSD?

more cores is better for cfd or rendering
i choosen ati because is cheaper and better in comparision with nvidia
i prefer corsair 300r because a bit cheaper and very well design / good ventilation and smaller case
i had one asrock h87 pro4 before and its like a truck ...very durable and well built
smaller ssd is enough to put the os in + cad / cfd softwares , the big files go on the hdd

So it seems at ordering time, the ati is out of stock with a long lead time, so I plan to go nvidea.
For the ram, is there any particular reason for the cards chosen? I noted a few less expensive options when I looked further with PNY.
For the power supply, is it necessary to have 750W? As i Understand it, I could get away with much less... Whats my limit in this case?
When looking at SSD, why choose samsung? I noted less expensive ones, but i assume its a quality/ speed issue?

Sry for all the questions, just want to attempt to understand everything.

''the ati is out of stock with a long lead time, so I plan to go nvidea. ''

too bad ...nvidia is a lot expensive then ati ...did you check if you can have a different model in ati?

''For the ram, is there any particular reason for the cards chosen''

corsair vengeance PRO series are simply the best ram out there for cfd / games

''When looking at SSD, why choose samsung? I noted less expensive ones, but i assume its a quality/ speed issue?''

your right samsung is a lot better ssd then any other brands on the market for the price and performance

Actually nvidea is $10 cheaper for the quadro 2000 with 2g ram. Or at least I think its comprable. Its linked in my origibal post

do not compare q2000 vs firepro v5900 ...the firepro is 20 to 30% more performer then q2000

What about the power supply in regards to needing that much power?
June 30, 2014 3:32:26 PM

for the psu ....a 500W psu should be good
