Use AHCI hard drive on IDE Windows 7 Laptop

My computers run in AHCI mode, and I mailed a external hard drive to a friend who has an older Windows 7 laptop.

When he plugs in the external hard drive it says driver failed; I'm assuming because his older Win7 laptop is IDE mode.

Is there any way to get the external hard drive recognized?

His laptop doesn't have internet access, is there a special driver he will need? Thanks for any input!
