Recently we've noticed a huge drop in upload speed in our companies internet speed, we're supposed to have 20mb/s download or upload depending on what's getting used more.

We first noticed a problem when people trying to share screens with others outside the company with the call quality of Skype rapidly dropping.

Using Speedtest.net we found we were getting 0.15mb/s upload.

Changing the default gateway to our firewall's IP address and bypassing the router entirely we get the speed we should be getting.

We've tried resetting the router but to no avail.

I'm not sure of the model of the router it is a pretty old one and apparently has no kind of web interface access.

I'm interested in the cause for this as it's something that I can't figure out, or see anyone else with a similar problem.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on what could cause this, I'll look into everything suggested.

If I had to guess i'd say there is either an NAT issue, or you have a consumer grade router that cant handle what you are doing with it, Nat/firewall rules?

Are you perhaps double nat ing ? If you are using a firewall/ nat on the firewall turn off these functions on your router?

MTU issues might be another avenue to explore

Thanks for the ideas, I don't think it has anything to do with the router as it is a recent thing, it's been working fine for years but in the last month or two something changed.

As far as I'm aware no settings have been changed and the router is supposedly an 'intelligent' router so it may have done something itself.

I'll look into the NAT on the router and the possibility of MTU issues

Thanks

I assume you are not using wireless by the way? As the wireless channel may change itself.

We've had issues with our wireless before but those problems are sorted, this affects all computers across the business regardless of whether a cable is used or through wireless.

More recently we're experiencing a drop with the download speeds too, from 20 Mb down to 3 Mb which is no where near what we should be getting. My boss is ordering a new router thinking that this other one is broken
