Question about 1440p 120 hz vs 1080p 120 hz

I have a Qnix Korean monitor that runs 1440p at 120hz when overclocked without a hitch. However, there are few games that can utilize the 120hz at 1440p. I would like to run games at 1080p at 120hz, but I want my desktop to stay at 1440p. Can anyone explain a way to make this happen for me, or if it is even possible?

Just use the in game menu to set the resolution to 1080p.

What do you mean utilize the 120hz at 1440p?

But to do it (assuming Nvidia), make a custom resolution in the control panel for 1080p 120hz, and the same in Custom Resolution Utility. Haven't got a clue for AMD.

The monitor will still run at 120hz. but the game will need to put out 120fps to do you any good.
