Is it any good? It says it is 4.2GHz but only has 2 cores?

I will be using it with 8GB ram and a GTX 660

In short, no.

I have been using one for around a year, and it is not very good all told.

Not very good at all. It's actually one of the slowest CPUs out there.

Don't get anything less than 4 cores if you intend on gaming.

If your sticking with AMD I'd suggest a Phenom if you can afford it.

whats your budget? if your tight your better of GEtting a G3258 or i3 4130/4150

Unless you're only interested in older games you really need to get a quad core or a dual core with hyperthreading at the very least (Core i3). I would avoid dual core Athlons, and Pentiums because they are unlikely to be supported by upcoming titles and you're likely going to see more Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition situations, where the dual core chips won't even launch the game without some kind of third party hack, which may or may not be available for future titles.

Cheapest quad core you can go for that is still ok for gaming is either the Athlon 760k or 860k.
