Greetings everyone!

I'm new to the forums but I'm not shy to how the things usually work.I'm here to ask the pro's just what I can do to build the foundation to what i hope will be a prosperous IT career!

Consider me a Novice to computers and the works of Information Technology.
What are some resources I can utilize online and offline that will broaden my understanding to the business?

I know that a lot of what an IT technician does is hands on, so where can I start at home?

In terms of a college education, what are some does and donts that I should be on the look out for?

Any advice is welcome, and I'd appreciate hearing some of your stories of how you began in the industry and your educations. All input is welcome, and again thanks for having me!

First step with gaining hands-on experience is to buy a cheap used PC and check that it works. Step 2 - take it to pieces then put it back together and check that it still works. Sounds silly but if you do it properly, you can sell it or experiment withh different upgrades for it.

Really? After building my gaming PC I felt that I knew all I needed to about the in's and out's of a computer. You don't sound silly Lout.. You know what! I'm going to take a look at our old family computer.

That busted up beast could teach me a thing or two!

You're pretty advanced if you've made your first PC - particularly a gaming model so I suggest you take a step up and master networking.

How should I go about learning to network? I haven't really tinkered with anything besides my home WiFi.

Just starting off by sharing files between your new build and that old family PC will show you a thing or two. I couldn't write enough here to be helpful - it's a huge subject - but it would be useful if not crucial to learn if you wanted to end up working for a large corporation in the IT section.

I Googled for "basic networking tutorial" and found several hits, some of them PDF downloads. Take your pick - some ar written more clearly than others.

Good luck.
