Monitor goes blank while GPU is kept

If i just keep my graphic card in its slot on motherboard and don't connect it to monitor (why because i don't have any DVI I to DVI D cable that is required to connect them) and connect my monitor to normal VGA slot of CPU does it hinder my display.
I did so and my display goes blank but every thing on my motherboard works fine(all the fans are spinning).
NEED ADVICE and THANKS IN ADVANCE

if u install a gpu then you have to connect your monitor with the GPU socket and not with the motherboard socket otherwise u will not get a display....
