Probably silly RAM questions

How often should you upgrade your RAM, I've personally had the same 2x4 GB and 2x2 GB for years, is there any reason to upgrade it? Also I've heard that having 2x8 GB is better than having say 2x4 GB and 1x8GB, is that a myth or true?
If it was time to upgrade, how much RAM would you recommend for a gaming rig, that I also use to code and run VMs?

2x8gb is better but 1x8 gb is best because 8gb is all you need today but in the future games might need 16gb or even 32gb so 1x8gb is basically recommended at the moment for gaming

Wrong, having 2 sticks makes RAM faster because of the memory. It's about 5% quicker. So 2x4GB will be the best. 8GB of RAM is all you need for gaming.

Since you don't often look to do anything w/ DRAM and with prices continuing to rise, I'd go 2x8GB which will set you for awhile, 2x4GB is considered entry level (and has for awhile) you will prob find the 2x8GB comes in handy with the VMs annd coding, should have less disk activity with back and forth from the page file

I know I am wrong but it saves you in the future and lets you upgrade to 32gb if you are going to be doing some heavy tasks, it's better than only going to 16gb or chucking the RAM out. You won't really notice the performance difference anyway it's just more handy to have

True, but I'm saying 2x4 is better than just 1x8 in performance. If you don't do anything else than gaming than you can get a 4x4 and that's overkill for any game, for a long time. (If you have 4 sockers for ram on your mobo ofc).
