Motherboard security in an unsecure world

With all the computer security issues coming to light recently, I'm looking for some advice on how to increase my chances of being “a little more” secure. Being from America, I’d like to be able to trust the products made here more, but that would be naive. I’ve already taken the plunge of updating my router to DD-WRT and I'm feeling slightly better. I’d like to find a better path to take with motherboards; either a more trusting company or something that could be made more trusting with open-source.

Thanks,

You don't need to worry about security and online privacy as regards the motherboard, it's the last link in your chain of devices that transfers your data over the net that you need to concentrate on, and that's the router/modem. You seem to have already taken steps to address that with DD-WRT.

I'm not aware of any open-source BIOS firmware for motherboards that address data security issues since as far as I'm aware there are no such issues to address at that level.
