Hey there, quick question for anyone who is interested in answering. I recently got a new GPU and PSU from Best Buy to beef up my gaming experience (you can see a related thread here - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2212049/bought-e...), and after some discussion, my friend who is fairly new to PC gaming (such as I am) went out and bought an EVGA GTX 760 w/ACX about 2 days ago from Best Buy to upgrade his rig, but he saw that they also had some NVIDIA reference 770's that appealed to him. So he and I were wondering if it was worth it to exchange/return the 760 ($262) for the 770 ($375), and have a difference of about $130. Or if he should just stick with the 760 for now? Some of the key words in the conversation included: 20-30% performance increase, future proofing, etc. So I just wanted to know what everyone on here thought about the situation.

I guess another tangent would be EVGA's ACX aftermarket cooling vs. the stock Titan cooler that comes on the reference card, and if that would make a tangible difference.

Thanks for all your help! I look forward to some opinions.

Depends on the games he plays and his monitor resolution and refresh rate. The performance increase can easily be wasted with the wrong game on the wrong monitor.

Most modern AAA games at 1080p/Ultra settings with 40-60 FPS. No multi-monitor or higher resolutions. 60 Hz refresh rate. With that in mind, do you think it's worth it? I think he wants to be able to run upcoming games like Dragon Age: Inquisition or the new(ish) Metro Redux at those settings. Games like that.

Personally, I'd never buy a reference card for the simple reason that they don't have very good coolers. A GTX 760 will be fine for 1080p at high/ultra settings (depending on the game) and 40-60 fps, so I don't think a $130 upgrade is worth it.

The 770 is a more powerful card than the 760. Period. You can only do so much with a non-reference cooler. And with the cards I've had I've found the reference cards form the 700 series are the way to go. So yes, it is well worth it to exchange cards. You can thank me later :)
