I'm looking to upgrade the system I originally built in 2010.
Here are my current specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb Quad-Core 3.4GHz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-790FXTA-UD5
Video Card: SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100352VXSR Radeon HD 7950 3GB
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (x2 for 8gb total)
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional
Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V v2.91
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced
SSD: Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III
HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005/HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

I've made up my mind on a new processor:
Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150
I'm still debating on which motherboard to get. I like the features of the ASUS Z97-PRO. But there is thread after thread of people praising the ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO.
I am upgrading for better gaming performance so that is my first priority. I do plan on keeping the ram I already have until I upgrade it in the future if need be. The Asus Pro has SATA Express where the Hero does not, and DIGI+ 12-phase where the Hero has DIGI+ 8+2-phase. I'm not sure I'll ever have a SATA Express SSD but should I be concerned about it for future proofing? The Pro also has 5-way Optimization where the Hero does not. Since I already have a dedicated sound card I don't care about the Supreme FX on the Hero. All these comparisons would make me buy the Pro but I see so many people praise the Hero and recommend it over other Z97 boards. What makes it so special? I'm not an extreme overclocker by any means but I would like the ability to do so for future-proofing. I do assume both boards support 4th and 5th gen I7s.

The Hero was my choice, have built on both and performance wise in OCing, DRAM handling and BIOS tweaking.....The Hero was the creme of the Z87s and looks to be in the Z97s also, mine OCs better(same CPUs (a pair of 4770s) both OC better on the Z97 + 0.1 and + 0.2) than on the Z87 at the same voltage, DRAM OCs better, etc. The Hero also runs cooler than many other Z97 mobos

The Hero does have a M.2 slot. It that sufficient since the Hero lacks SATA Express?

I'll be popping a M.2 in once there's a good selection, I'm still not all that positive how well SATA Express will go over, as is a regular Hard drive (7200) is plenty to feed games and many use the 'regular' SSDs although the only real improvement in that gaming wise is the intial load when you start the game
