Hi,

I am confused. I am on a tight budget, I can either get a GTX 760 4GB or a GTX 770 2GB, which one would you recommend? By the way, I will be using the card strictly for gaming at 1080p.

Thanks

More about : gtx 760 4gb gtx 770 2gb

a R9 280X has the performance of a 770 (more when overclocked), it is slightly cheaper, has 3gb vram, and the only drawback is that it is a bit hotter and louder.

I am kind of a Nvidia fanboy. Never had an ATI in my life and probably never will. Thanks for your answer though but the 280X is not what I am looking for.

But isn't >3GB of VRAM a big deal nowadays if you want to game at Ultra? Case in point being, BF4 and Watchdogs.

Get 770, yes more VRAM is nice, but it is generally only coming into a play at above that 1080p resolution or if you crank up your AA settings to the max, neither of which you will be able to do with 760 anyway.

4GB VRAM on 760 is just a marketing scam really. I mean you aren't really going to play Watch Dogs on ultra on 760 anyway.

And honestly I am not sure why you are not going for 280X, I understand the sentiment, but it is simply a superior product at that price point.

If you can wai and get a 770 4gb, I'm able to play watch dogs at 1080p with AA with about 50fps and it looks snooth to me, don't know what people are talking abot.
But if you can't, the 2gb 770 will be better

Thanks guys. I will be saving up for a 4GB 770. However, one more question; does it matter if I get the 770 from PNY instead of EVGA? EVGA's version is considerably expensive while PNY's is way cheaper. I understand that the only difference between them is the cooling solution being used. Then why all the difference in price?

I'd get either Gigabyte or Evga because they're more known.

Get the 4 GB version only if you're that concerned about using Ultra textures in Watch Dogs. I'd argue its not worth it, but its your call to make. Nothing else that I can think of will use more than 2 GB at ultra @ 1080p, even BF4 stubbornly sits at 2040 MB when I have more available. I'm not of the mind that Watch Dogs constitutes a trend or precursor of what's to come.

Additionally, while I know this isn't what you want to hear, you can get some Radeon R9 290's on sale for almost as much as a 4 GB GTX 770. It's a faster card and comes with 4 GB in its stock configuration on a faster memory bus.

Between PNY and EVGA, check the warranties involved as well. EVGA tends to offer pretty beefy warranties and they have a good reputation as far as I know. I hear little or nothing [positive OR negative] about PNY, so it might be worth spending a little more from that angle as well.

Maxwell cards are coming by Q4 2014, if you are 100% purchasing nvidia, might be worth it to wait.

The 280x is the better buy right now, especially if you are getting a 4gb 770, that's over $100 extra for being "fanboy" as you said, you aren't actually gaining anything unless you are utilizing nvidia specific features (phyxs, g-sync, etc) . But, you obviously get to make your own decisions.

Definitely wait for Maxwell! the 750 and 750ti have shown amazing performance-per watt and it's going to continue :)

If you can't wait, get a 2gb 770 and be happy imo

I have heard that Maxwell-based GPUs only offer a 10% performance increase, so I don't think they are worth-waiting for (neglecting the excellent power consumption ratios). Additionally, I am currently sitting on a GTX 460 and can't wait to get rid of it :p

Actually PhysX is a big deal for me since most games I am looking forward to playing on my new card are optimized for utilizing it; Watch Dogs, Arkham Origins, Black Flag, to name a few. Also it is down to preferences, Geforce vs Radeon is like the Intel vs AMD of Graphics Cards; you normally don't make a switch from the one you trust.

Are you able to get a GTX 770 4GB?
The thing is that playing BF4 on my R9 280x I noticed that the VRAM usage hit and sometimes went over 2 GB, hence I would not recommend a 2GB VRAM card for the more demanding games, at least not for playing on Ultra.

Yup, I am saving up for it but I can't get it now (the EVGA version that is). However I can manage the PNY version. The PNY card, though lesser known has some great reviews going for it but I am skeptical about getting it despite the fact that the cooling and aesthetics are the only real differences between the two. I, however, believe that EVGA is charging a premium for its market rep.
