If the belt burned onto the pulley it is most likley that the tension was set too high or low (how tight the belt is). Since you said it was a 2000 caddy it most likly has a serpintine belt (one big belt that loops around all of the pulleys) but older cars had seperate belts for all the different items (crank output, water pump, power steering, alternator, a/c compressor).
If the belt is the sepintine belt then there is an auto-tensionor on it and that applies pressure and I would have a shop check to make sure it is the proper tension (Or buy the gauge and lookup online on how to do it).
If you have a multi belt system then each belt has its own tension method.
If you are going to start working on your own vehicle you should really invest in a haynes or chilton manual for your car as the information in there is your car specific and very very useful.
