Apparently some updates ARE still rolling out for Windows XP.

Microsoft has released a security update to Silverlight 5.

If you use Netflix on your computer, then you have Silverlight and need to install this update! If you have automatic updates turned on it will be installed automatically. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id...

Sdfox7,

Just to avoid any confusion, this is not a Windows XP specific update but a Silverlight 5 update. Any operating system running this version of Silverlight will be affected.

KB2977218 is an update that addresses a memory leak issue with a Silverlight application. It is actually a new build (version 5.1.30514.0) that is an upgrade to earlier versions of Silverlight. This update is included in current Silverlight installers. If your computer does not have Silverlight installed, the installer will be offered to you by Microsoft Update or by Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This update was released on July 23, 2014.

This information and more can be found on the July 2014 update for Microsoft Silverlight 5 webpage.

Point well taken. In addition to Silverlight, Office 2007 & 2010 also continue receive updates under XP.

It would seem to me that the situation would be the same with Internet Explorer, since IE 8 runs on XP, Vista. 7. But it appears Microsoft has made a conscious effort to withhold the updates from the public using Windows XP.

Why is the situation with IE 8 any different than Silverlight or Office?

Sdfox7,

The situation with Internet Explorer 8 is different because unlike Silverlight or Office, it is considered a component of the operating system. Once support for an operating system ends, support for its components end as well. In addition to Internet Explorer 8, other components include Outlook Express and Windows Media Player.

Since support for Windows XP ended in April 2014, support for its operating system components ended at the same time.
