Basically what the title says, I have an old PC that runs on Windows XP, >5 years old, and I was wondering if it is possible to install SteamOS on it. I've been looking at the min specs required and basically everything falls short.
Graphics Card: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=...
1 GB Ram
Intel Pentium D processor
250 GB HDD

More about : run steamos low end

If it falls short on the min requirements, then it probably won't run well at all. If it does, it won't play many games that's for sure, or do much else other than install. The 1GB ram is a huge hit for any OS, even a Linux nowadays.

The computer runs WinXP at the moment but the USB drivers are corrupt and I cannot use the Keyboard or Mouse past BIOS/Boot menu etc, so I've been looking for a work-around without having to buy WinXP again. Was thinking about using linux on it so I was going to go for SteamOS but saw the min reqs and thought I'd check up first...
Thanks anyway

Should be able to get into safemode and everything should work. you can also download winxp and use your key. if you have a legit key, you're all good.

But 1GB of ram is going to cripple linux, win 7, any modern os. Time for a new PC.

Will it install? Maybe, probably.
Can you then actually use it? Almost certainly not. The OS might 'run', but games will choke. Hard.

Not getting a new PC for 3-6 months. I have a laptop but got my old PC out for a small project. I've tried safe mode and it doesn't do anything, nothing I can do will allow me to use keyboard/mouse while running windows. I can only use Linux and BIOS with them working... And as for the key, the PC was given to me by a family member and thus I don't have a copy of WinXP. I might be able to get a copy but if I did, I'd probably just do a full reinstall to reset it all for other reasons, I was just hoping there'd be a work-around before I had to go to that stage.

If the problem is not having a windows copy you can try puppy linux, it will easily run on yor system. Or, ehem, you know, you can sail the seven seas and get a xp copy.

The second half of your suggestion is quite possibly the worst thing you could suggest. For both the OP and you.

But quite possibly be the funniest thing I've read on an internet forum :p
The computer isn't going to be upgraded any time soon, I'm not using it for anything major, I just had it laying around and wanted a weekend project. Just got stuck deciding if I can use SteamOS or a work-around for the keyboard/mouse problem

Then any of a number of low demand Linux distros will work.
