First off I just want to say hello. Long time reader, first time poster, and you guys are awesome)

But I am planning on building a boss gaming computer. I dont really want to worry about OCing it, but i want it to remain viable for quite a while. I have been wanting a really nice computer for a long time and have finally decided to spoil myself. The goal of this build is for it to be able to play almost any game at ultra settings with a 2 display set up. And I am worried that there is no need to buy all these really nice parts if I am not going to get the full potential out of them. So here it goes

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UP7 TH -- 3x PCIe 3.0 x16, 4 x USB 3.0, 6x SATA-III 6Gb/s
Im going with the 3x PCIe because 1) i might want to add another GPU sometime and 2) i was thinking about purchasing a 500 gb SSD that connects via PCIe to load my OS and games.

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4790 Processor (4x 3.60GHz/8MB L3 Cache)
The reason I am going with this is because 1) i figure the 4790k was unlocked and becuase i dont really think i will be messing with OC that much it wouldnt be necessary and 2) because i am looking for this to be a very viable gaming computer for as long as possible. I have read some great reviews on those two chips, however i am worried that it will be uncessary.

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290X - 4GB
I dont know if i should go with the 290X or get 2 270x. the 270's will be cheaper, but I am not really on a budget, and i want this thing to be a beast/last a while. right now i am leaning towards the 290X. Plus then that leaves me with one more PCIe slot open.

Sound Card: is having a sound card necessary if i can just go with the 3D premium sound onboard. Having a sound card takes up a PCIe slot which i may want one open if i decide to crossfire/sli any time.

RAM: 8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module
I dont really see needing much more than this. I may be wrong though. Like i said ive never built a comp before.

Power Supply: I will just try to find a 80+ gold supply with 650-700 W.

I think that is most of the basics. Obviously there are more considerations, but I believe that these are the main ones that could make or break my comp and could require discussion. If I am missing anything else super important please let me know! I just want to know what you guys think and if I am going a bit overboard.

If you really want to spoil yourself, you should go for a sli 780, it's better for 4k, and stuff like that, but a r2 290x would be fine for dual setup on ultra, maybe. what resolution do you plan on playing it at? Or get a 780 ti?

Why not getting the GTX 690?Or the HD 7990?

I'll just be at 3840x1080, i prob wont be getting a 4k tv so i dont think that it will be too taxing on it. Also i know there are arguments about this all over the internet, but I really dont know anything about the difference between AMD and NVIDIA. are the 780s particulary better? or is it just they are better at different things?

780's is quite ahead of 290X's they are technically better but around the same price for 290X, I would suggest 2 270X's if your looking for around 1 290x or 780

Lol while i am trying to spoil myself, im not trying to go bat shit crazy. Total i would like to spend about 2.5k tops. with by storage, and computer screens, etc... Those would take my price a little over what im comfortable with.

Maybe swap the motherboard for an ASUS maximus vii hero. The onboard sound is decent enough.
If you really want more then the ASUS maximus vii Formula.
What country are you in?

the only prob with that is if i want to upgrade. ill have to shell out for two 290s instead of only getting one more, i guess the question is how long the two 270s would be able to maintain top end performance. Though i said i want this build to last for as long as possible, it will be much easier for me to shell out 400 bucks to buy another 290 in a couple years, than 800. which i dont know near enough about to be able to make a decision on. lol

Then you should go for the r2 290x, it has 4gb of vram so more ideal for higher res. people prefer nvidia because they are more power efficient and more powerful ( But they have to pay more)

that is pretty sexy. but will it allow me to have two GPUs? Im dont quite understand the PCIe ports. I know the 16x is the fastest, while 8x is half that. but how it works where having two things plugged into the PCIe x16 could make them both 8x is where i get confused lol. maybe its just because i dont know how to differentiate between the ones that are dedicated x16 and the ones that share their pins with other PCIe ports. Oh and im in the US

Right on, thanks for your advice, ive been researching this for quite a while cause i dont want to mess this up :p . im glad we had the same conclusion lol

How are 780';s better than r2 290x? the 780 ti is only marginally better than the r2 290x, no way is the 780 better than the r2 290x, don't go crossfire, it's quite unreliable, worse than sli I hear. Go for 780 ti, best bet if you have enough money but a single r2 290x will handle your requirements just fine

Yes ASUS maximus vii hero and formula support Crossfire or SLI. It would be dual X8 mode for two gpus.

Yea, i guess another question i have is whether having a 500gb (still deciding on the exact size) SSD hooked up to a PCIe is worth it? The one im lookin at has some absurd 1.8 gb/s read/write. (the RevoDrive 350). Would this really benefit me at all? or could i just have a normal (albeit much cheaper one) that uses a SATA connection be better? This is really the only reason i was thinking about having a mobo with 3 PCIe ports
July 25, 2014 5:37:41 AM

My oppinion is that s SATA SSD will suffice.
The recommended mobo seems better, and regarding the GPU`s go for either R9 290X or GTX 780ti if you have the money.
2x R9 270X is not viable, because the VRAM does not add, so you`ll have only 2 GB of VRAM for two screens, which is not a great idea.

Regarding the CPU, since the mobo is not a problem, and the budget would allow it, just get the K version for some safety net.
If at one point in time you need more power from your CPU, why get a new CPU (and maybe even mobo), when you can OC the old one and get some more lifetime out of it.
July 25, 2014 5:49:37 AM

If you can afford it, go for 780 ti, but a r2 290x will do fine, just like 10% decrease in performance compared to a 780 ti

ok cool! thanks a lot for your help guys! i look forward to getting these parts in the mail and trying to put it together!
