Hi,

My current rig I built back in 2008 currently consists of:

1- Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Yorkfield Quad-Core 3.2GHz LGA 775 136W Processor BX80569QX9770
2- EVGA 132-YW-E179-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
3- Mushkin Enhanced Redline 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 997013
4- GeForce GTX 285 1GB
5- Mushkin Enhanced 550300 800W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular Active PFC Power Supply

I just recently got a 250 GB Samsung EVO SSD. Although it's SATA III, my mobo doesn't support so I'm running the drive over SATA II. It's certainly an upgrade from my original 10k RPM WD Velociraptor's I was running my OS off of.

However, I'm thinking of getting a Radeon R9 280X (or GTX 770, leaning towards the 280X) as an upgrade for my video card. I am a gamer and currently that feels like it's the next in line for needing an upgrade. Although my MOBO only supports PCIe 2.0 and not 3.0, I heard that's not an issue.

Big question, Is my Core 2 Extreme @ 3.2 GHz and the rest of the setup enough juice to not create any other bottleneck with the system if I upgrade the video card? Any other thoughts/suggestions? I spend so much money on that chip I want it to last as long as possible before needing to upgrade!

Thanks in advance for all the feedback.

There's not gonna be any bottleneck with the extreme quad core c2q, it'll be even better if you OC the processor.

The once very high end QX9770 will still able handle either 280x and 770. Other suggestions, those are the best cards for 1080p screens.
Other options: 900p: gtx 660/r9 270, 1440p: R9 290/gtx 780, UHD: 780ti or better(2x 780ti or AMD 295x2). Note that you will need a new processor for any card that can support 1440p @ 45fps+.

My current monitor is also outdated... but one of the best at the time.

SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms (GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1(DC 3000:1)

It's top resolution is 1680 x 1050 so 'close' to 1080p :(

I'm thinking my next upgrade will be to a 1080p monitor so that's why I was thinking of going with the R9 280X or GTX 770. No issues with continuing to roll with this monitor for the time being?

Nope. No issues, the video card won't care what resolution it is.
