Is this a good monitor upgrade for me?

Have been using a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW for a really long time now and feel like upgrading to something a little bigger and better. Mainly because I feel I want to go 16:9 instead of my current 16:10, 27" seems like a good size upgrade from my current 22", and because my monitor maxes out at 1680x1050.

Was looking at this one-- seem good?

Would be for every day usage with a lot of gaming in mind. Current monitor has a 2ms response, so I don't think I'd want any slower when upgrading. Any thoughts or other suggestions entirely? Not interested in 3D, and I'm trying to keep it under $300.

I would not recommend a 27" monitor at 1920 x 1080 resolution as the pixels per inch is too small @ 81.8 ppi .... the human eye can see individual pixels starting at 96 dpi....the lower you go, the more grainy image appears. Recommended sizes for each resolution are"

2560 x 1440 - 27"
1920 x 1080 = 23"

ignbore advertised response times, they are not "real".

Best gaming monitor under $300 = Asus Vg248QE 144 Hz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313

Their 27" equivalent is 2560 x 144 Hz and is $799

The VG278HE ($380) is also 144 Hz TN but can be a bit grainy
The PA248Q/QJ ($418) is IPS but here's the difference between the Asus IPS and TN displays in gaming

PA248Q/QJ IPS Panel

VG278HE TN Panel

I have found that the images on THG tend to "disappear", so if they do, look here

I guess I should specify, my GPU is a GTX 670 ftw. Would this struggle at 1080p or 1440p? I understand what you're saying with regard to seeing pixels on a 1080p 27" screen, especially because I only sit ~22 inches away from my current monitor, but will paying the premium for a 1440p 27" monitor end up making me wish I had a better GPU?

Hmm. I know ~40fps is fine usually, but I wouldn't be satisfied. Love 60fps. Going 1440 with the lesser framerate might lead me down the dark path of PC upgrading again, so not sure if I want to do that just yet ha.
