GTX 780> gtx 770/280x. In this case, the R9 290 would also come into play at that price range usually and gtx 770/280x are not in same performance level as 780/290.

For the cost of the 780, I would get the 290 or 290x. Other than that, I would get the 280x, it is cheaper than the 780 and they are basically the same card. The 780 has like 200 more CUDA cores than the 280x has stream processors. Other than that, you are paying a lot more for about the same performance between the 280x and the 780.

So I would just get a 290 and OC myself through MSI Afterburner or AMD Overdrive. Or get the 280x.

Is it true that the r9 series without "x" doesn't worth it

R9 290 is one of the better values among the high end cards. It provides performance as good as gtx 780 without the same price tag. I usually recommend 290 way more than 290x because its just a better option in terms of performance to price ratio.

r9 280x has the price/performance ratio reward for that level of gpu, I would go with the 280x here, but at the end comes to personal preference and budget, if you don't have loads of money get the 280x but if you have ,,,, theeeen get the 780, but I see more potential in 280x and the price its right!
