Hey everyone, this is my first time building a desktop so I need some help with the components that I've chosen so far. The following are components that I found on newegg.com:

Corsair Vengeance Series C70 Arctic White Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

ASRock Z97 Extreme6 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

EVGA SuperClocked 02G-P4-2765-KR GeForce GTX 760 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support w/ EVGA ACX Cooler Video Card

CORSAIR RM Series RM550 550W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 Desktop Processor BX80646I74790K

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B

SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM

I've left out a monitor, keyboard, and disk drive because those aren't as important for my computer to actually function.

As this my first build i need some help with these things specifically:

1) Will my chosen components operate together properly?
2) Are there any components that you would recommend that I substitute for?
3) Is my power supply adequate for my build?
4) While I don't mind spending a few extra bucks, are my components worth their price?
5) Any generals hints or tips for a first timer would be welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks in advance everyone

what is your budget?
Will you overclock?
what are the parts that you dont need?
Do you need an OS?

answer those and we might be able to hook you up with a great PC build.

Current build is listed for about 1300 from newegg prices

Overclock possibly, but not quite yet

Not sure what you are referring to with parts I don't need. My list are the essential components to run

I need the OS cause I don't have any OS disks laying around.

parts that you might not need like an optic drive or HDD that you can re-use from another PC.

ill make a quick build for you for $1300 and see what you think

you have $60 more for case fans, if you aren't doing any video editing you can go for the I5 4690k and change a few part

I appreciate the list, but you're not even saying why i should change from my list to your's except for your reason behind changing CPU's

But ya, i can grab an optic drive from another computer but i need the rest

1) Will my chosen components operate together properly? yes
2) Are there any components that you would recommend that I substitute for? yes a few, you can cut down the price of some compenents to get better performance for a graphics cards, some other components can be gotten cheaper or a better quality
3) Is my power supply adequate for my build? Yes for that build it is
4) While I don't mind spending a few extra bucks, are my components worth their price? some
5) Any generals hints or tips for a first timer would be welcomed and appreciated. >> you dont have a CPU cooler for overclocking,

to make a build use this website http://pcpartpicker.com/
*dont go for an expensive motherboard and paying extra for features you dont need
* no need to get an I7 and paying an extra $100 if you dont need the threads for vedeo editing, when the I5 is good enough
*always look for a good quality PSU
*Get the best graphic card you can get

Well at least i know i chose my parts to work together.

Considering the graphics card, what are some alternative choices that provide better performance than the one I chose, while being within the same price range as mine?

What other parts might i consider swapping?

The R9 280 is in the same price range and performs slightly better. but for a $1300 build, I would highly recomend going for a more powerful graphics card.

you can go for a cheaper motherboard $160,ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 is a good choice.
The power supply you chose is great, but you can get something better with more wattage for cheaper price.
Antec High Current Gamer 620W is a good choice and its semi modular.

I actually just switched my motherboard over to the extreme4 haha. Priced for 130 before mail-in rebates which is nice to save a little for no real performance change.

Is there any real advantage to having more wattage once i have enough to support my build? Pcpartpicker has my build rated for about 337 watts, while i chose a 550W. Does going to 620W change that much(ignoring any price changes)?

no real advatage of having more wattage, 550 is good enough, especially if its a good quality PSU, 620 is for some headroom for overclocking and such.

So i'm trying to look into better video cards like you recommended. If the most expensive i want to go is 450-500$, what sort of GPU's are the best to look at?

for $380 you can get a R9 290, which is a powerful graphics card, Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X
This is also a good quality brand for it too.

and I think thats a good enough Graphics card to be honest, it the best price per performance card.

you also have the GTX780 which is slightly better but costs more and then the 290X. but you will be paying more for less gain.

sapphire vapor x >> the best one for cooling but more expensive
gigabyte windforce >> they have an overclocked version too, which I own
Sapphire tri X >> better than windforce
those are the good 3 types that are I would recomend.

EDITE:
heres a poll which would help
