I'm doing some early planning to build a 4K gaming rig in the expectation that all the cutting edge components I need will be available in around six months time. I'm keen to get advice on what's actually essential, as opposed to buying stuff like a hardware fanboy.

Prime purpose – To play multiplayer (especially BF4) on highest res and maximum fps. My broadband is 120Mbps.
Budget – Best guess is around £4k (excuse the pun)

Monitor – Around 30”; IPS; 2ms response (is response less important than refresh?); 60Hz (120Hz possible or necessary?)
Cards – 2 x GTX 790 (quad-SLI) or equivalent (I have no idea if nVidia will ever release this model but its price point can't be anywhere near the Titan Z. And the release date for the GTX 800 series has apparently been deferred to October 2015)
CPU - Intel Core i7 4930K @ 4.6GHz (is hex core HT necessary?) with Corsair H100 Hydro Cooler
Board - Asus Rampage IV Extreme Black
RAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2133MHz (is anything over 4GB necessary for gaming alone? Do CPUs restrict/throttle RAM over 1333MHz anyway?)
PSU - Antec High Current Pro 1300W Full Modular 80+ Platinum (is this a good brand?)
Case – HAF X (already own)
SSD – OCZ (already own)

This is quite speculative right now but I'm keen to know whether some of this spec will be available soon and if I'm on the right track.

Thanks.

I will be you want about that budget and be back as soon as possible mate.

And is will show what is necessary and what is not as it is for gaming only. And I think I should be able to bring down your budget.

I have save £1700 for you on this build and what is necessary. All the parts are compatible with each other. And these setup would last you a long time in the gaming industry.

A NVIDIA 790 doesn't exist, so I placed in a 780Ti Quad SLI.

Yes Antec is a good brand, however nothing could be compatible with our specs except for EVGA and some others. I chose EVGA because it is a reliable brand for a PSU.

Yes games like Battlefield 4 need at least 8GB of RAM.

Great build! I would extend the RAM to 32gb (4x8gb) so you can do video editing later on. I don't think that nvidia are going to be releasing a 790, at least not any time soon, I would recommend the r9 295x2 x2 (quadfire) But you need a beast of a power supply to power them, The 4930k is great, I would go with the H110 if you can get it, if not the h105 since it performs better. Antec is a good brand but needs more juice:

Some good advice there so far; thanks. What's really driving this build is the monitor but the spec I'm after doesn't exist yet. Is it fair to assume that a 2ms 60Hz IPS model will emerge soon? Once that happens, I can buy the rest to suit. As far as cards go, I've always had nVidia and would prefer to stick with those. I've read good things about the R9 295X2 but also that Radeon support/drivers aren't great.

So how about the NVIDIA 780Ti Quad SLI I posted.

I believe they're the best single-GPU card out there but I'm fairly certain Quad-SLI only works with 2 x multi-GPU cards and not 4 individual cards. This is what I've read anyway.

Alright then. :)

From another Tom's thread: "That last unknown is will the 780ti even work in 4-way SLI? Officially, Nvidia cards, other than their dual cards (like the 590 or 690) do not support 4-way SLI, though the Titan does unofficially, but many of their cards are artificially blocked from 4-way SLI."
There would also be a problem, I think, with 4 x GTX 780ti because they occupy 2 slots each and how many boards can accommodate 8 slots wide of cards? I'm kind of depending on a GTX 790 coming out but I don't think nVidia will shoot themselves in the foot by releasing something that would make people question the Titan Z price tag. But what do I know?

Yeah I just search the problem and visited the thread as well. Well, I know that there will be a 800 Series but never heard of 790 before.

And today I read nVidia has released a GTX 980 & 970. Is the 800 series now redundant? In any case, the 2K BF4 benchmarks for the 980 and my old 690 are almost identical on Ultra/2 x MSAA settings. The big draw of these Haswell 900 cards is the power efficiency and basic fps.

Dare I dream of a GTX 990?

And I just found this article from July - http://www.tweaktown.com/news/38953/nvidia-will-reportedly-launch-its-geforce-gtx-990-in-early-2015/index.html

Speculation sure, but it's already partly come to fruition. I can definitely wait until early 2015 for 2 x GTX 990's (that's quad-SLI) to power my new beastie 4K rig. And it probably won't need more than a 1200-1350W PSU to power it. All I'll need then is for monitor technology to catch up and provide a 144Hz, G-Sync 4K IPS panel with 2ms response. I'm officially excited.
