Total nube looking for help. I assembled a PC from old components for my 5 and 7 year old sons who fancy themselves gamers and are now throwing around terms like frame rate and frame lag.

Anyway it is a:

Mobo: Msn-sli
Bios: Ver 1103
Chipset: nForce 560 sli
CPU: Penom II x4 945 - Deneb core
Memory: (4) 1Mb DDR2 800 chips
Graphics: GeForce 210
OS: Win7 32-bit

Two issues:

#1 memory performance seems very low. Memory running at 412Mz and all four chips are identical. The bank cycle time (tRC) is reported at 23 for slots 1 and 2 but at 102 for slots 3 and 4. Also OS only recognizing 2.75Gb and not the 3,25 Gb I am used to with the 32-bit OS.

#2 Being clueless I have no idea what to do to get this old hodgepodge working as best as possible. Don't want to spend too much money but willing to invest some. Currently all default settings with AI overclock at a conservative 3%

I can provide more info if needed including CPU-Z captures.

first off upgrade the motherboard to ddr3 then get 4gb of ram then upgrade the graphics card to a gtx 650 or 650ti then for the games I imagine them playing (Minecraft, Garrysmod) There should be no lag, or just turn down the video settings for the game so they experiance no lag.

yes, Minecraft, Garrysmod, Kerbal space program, and they want 7 days to die, etc.

I have a GTX 660 floating around that I can drop in.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced motherboard? I would prefer something similar enough that I don't need to reload the operating system or get another processor. Memory I would figure out after figuring out the mobo.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm impressed you guessed the specific games. The seven year old is getting too smart for his own good and is still at the age where he thinks I know everything.

I would not get this power supply - the Corsair CX series uses poor capacitors. Stick with an XFX 450W power supply or Seasonic 420W power supply.

Yes my mistake go with a seasonic psu as they are one of the best brands that you can get out there.

Thank you! You have been extremely helpful. I will check out the links and let you know in a week or two how it all turned out. I expect it to go very well. And when done I will have enough spare parts to build the five year old his own PC as well. I do have a few spare 450 watt power supplies and a spare case. Already a 450 watt in there currently. So all os well and I am excited to get started. Thank you..

Not sure quite how to do this, but:

This is what I have now. Will update you upon video card upgrade and motherboard/memory upgrade. Let me know if there is a different benchmark you would prefer to se" alt="" class="imgLz frmImg " />" alt="" class="imgLz frmImg " />" alt="" class="imgLz frmImg " />

For my existing system:

Well, I tried 3DMark 11 basic but it refused to install.
Then I tried 3Dmark Basic version 1.3.708 (32-bit) and it crashed all three times I ran it. Did get some results through. On my three tries for Cloud Gate I got 1812, 0, and 0. For Ice Storm I got 2338, 23417, and 23401. Fire Storm and Sky Diver could not run as I had incompatible hardware.
Finally I tried 3DMark Vantage Basic build 1.1.2 and it also crashed all three time it ran though I did get a score of P795 the first time it ran. The other two provided no results.

So, I had already planned on getting the PNY GTX660 video card before starting this discussion. Cost me just under $170. I sort of followed advice and sort of went off on my own and also purchased an MSI 970A-G43 motherboard with the AMD970 / 950 chipset along with a 4G Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1600C9 DDR3 1600 memory chip. Combined they cost me an additional $106. (59.99 for mobo and 45.99 for memory).

Nicely I now have enough spare parts to build another system so 7 year old and the 5 year old can each do their own thing at the same time. Plan on putting an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor on the M2N-SLI with the 4G of DDR2 800 memory. Have spare everything else so should be good enough for youtube and netflix even if it wont run any games more complicated than Zuma Delux or Plants vs Zombies.

Hopefully will find time tomorrow to at least finish off the one system and let you know the results.

new results: No crashes when running the benchmarks.

3DMark 11 Basic still wont load.

3DMark 1.3.708 (32-bit) Basic
Cloud Gate : 10500
Ice Storm : 91153
Fire Storm : 4146
Sky Diver : 10755

3DMark Vantage Basic - P16845
