So basically the FX 8300 is lower than the fx8320? But also lower tdp? Why not just get the 8350 on sale since that same person will still get a better than stock CPU cooler?

While not exactly food for the high end enthusiast, it's good to see that AMD still remembers that there some consumers that do not wish a graphics card glued to the cpu. I hope Tom's get one of the new Athlon chips for testing as soon as they are available. Maybe it will be able to trespass on i3 territory when overclocked.

Depends what your looking at. Phenoms will perform better than any FX in single threaded, by a small margin. Phenoms will also draw less power over time, by a small margin. Hz ratings will only go so far as IPC, quality of other components such as cache, FPU and a few other components that I don't fully understand make up a huge portion of the overall performance. FX series they used some cheap components that are huge parts of the equation of why FX series failed when comparing to an 8350 to an I7 processor. Personally got my 8320 @ 4.0 Ghz and its suited me just fine for gaming/movies/running game server and mumble all at the same time.

Games are about even but look for the 8 cores to get a big boost from dx12 and mantle. Here is a comparison of the 2 under DX11. Note your OC doesn't matter as you should get about the same results from this fx-8300.

I own the 8350fx after several benchmarks being done newer games just prefer the newer CPU's from Amd i can say farcry 3-watch dogs and simcity-BF4 all played 20% better on the FX and i had the 1100T OC 3.9Ghz and my 8350fx is only at 4.3ghz. Application performance is only around 10-15% better however but gaming is definitely up in new games take a look at some newer game cpu benchmarks

I guess it depends what you mean. For an APU the FX-7600P looks pretty darn good if priced right - when the OEMs start putting out product. It's got a full 512 shaders - better than some entry level discrete mobile GPUs, and it's got DDR3 2133 support. It's also got slightly higher clocks than even the fastest mobile Richland, and higher IPC to boot. So it's not too bad on the CPU front, and anything that relies on compute or graphics will do great. I'm hoping we'll see more OpenCL accelerated software, as well as continued improvements to things like hybrid crossfire and Mantle.

Actually you're not entirely correct. The FM2 750K and 760K were Trinity and Richland based, respectively. As a result they were built with Piledriver cores. The 860K is the first CPU-only FM2+ chip, based on Kaveri, and using Steamroller cores. So the 860K is quite new in that regard and may be a good competitor to the unlocked Pentium if they price it right.

I believe this means that the OEM only FX-8300 will now be sold at retail. So we could now buy it at Newegg or Amazon instead of having to buy an HP or something to get it (not that anyone would be this desperate).

The Athlon release was a good thing, for sure. I've been doing builds lately, for friends, and, unless they are doing an extreme budget build, it's hard for me to recommend anything on the FM2+ platform. The current Trinity and Richland-based Athlons are luke warm sells, so hopefully this addition augments that situation.

This is actually good news for me. I have a AM3+ board that's rated at 95W TPD. That means I can't get the 8350 or 8320. I would either have to get a bulldozer 8-core or get the OEM version of the FX-8300 which has been out for quite some time. You can already buy them from korea, but it looks like I'll just wait for the retail release here in the states.

Now that I think about it, the Athlon X4 860K opens a new road for the users.
Unlike what I (and possibly others) expected, they are no longer limited to APU to APU upgrade, they can do an APU to CPU + dGPU change.
I am also curious, what can the Steamroller achieve on it's own.

He meant the 860k is the first CPU-ONLY aka not a APU with IGP. You misinterpreted his comment. 7850k was the first APU based on Kaveri. 860k is the first CPU.

I've been watching 8350 prices like a hawk and would love to pick one up - but ONLY on sale. I know it will really only give me marginal increases over my 980 (for what I do anyway), but admittedly I am curious to see if I can squeeze some noticeable gains in gaming. Plus I've been looking for an excuse to tinker with new thermal paste and possibly a new cooling solution.

The 750K was gold, the 760K BE even better, but the CPU part in Kaveri has not so brilliant performance, it's 28nm and it does deliver the same performance at lower TDP and power consumption.. For the FX 8300 i think that it's very wise to move in this direction, CPU power in gaming doesn't count in many games. An Athlon 5350 deliver similar experience to a 4960X. Those who want more cores in the hope future games will take advantage have now a lower cost lower consumption option but i think the whole platform is quite old and i really hope that they abandon the modules to build complete multicores, address memory controller slowness (compared to Intel products) and get their hands an a really new production node. Intel is going to release 14nm cpus very soon.

Interesting news, I know the Athlon is a shot back at Intel's new Pentium, but the release of another FX piledriver based CPU is an interesting strategy. They may price their own FX 6xxx out with it if it's priced low enough. Hasn't the 8300 been available to OEM's for awhile now, or was it a Korea and China only part? Either way, if it's unlocked, which I'm sure it is, it will be interesting to see how it overclocks and how much power it burns when overclocked. If it can hit 4.0+ GHz on air for say $120 it would be a compelling CPU, an extreme budget 8350:)

AMD Roadmaps have no FX chips beyond Vishera until at least Q4 2015, anything else would be a surprise. They are presumably waiting for DDR4 to get mainstream and SATA Express to mature and gain wider adoption, of course I don't make the decisions at AMD so I don't know for sure but that is the only thing that makes sense to me. They may also be waiting for GloFo and TSMC to be able to go to 20nm, maybe all of the above. Either way I am not holding my breath, the 8300 is a good midpoint between 6350 and 8320, hopefully the lower TDP will not impact performance too much.

So the new 8-core perform worse then the current models but use less power? Okay, that makes sense because enthusiast and gamers are all about saving every watt possible. Yeah I said (typed) that with a straight face, lol. As a AMD partner told me "AMD GPU good, AMD CPU crap". I see nothing here or on the horizon to change that.

Wrong. The 9XXX series is made out of spare space heater components. =P

Interesting is that the A10-7850K (steamroller 2 Modules / 8 GPU Cores) actually competes with the 8350 (vishera 4 module) pretty well in quite a few tests ( http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1200?vs=697). My point is I'm looking forward to excavator (20nm with a focus on performance) however if they don't bring back some form of enthusiast chip or the chip continues the trend of under performing / power hungry, AMD might not be able to make gains back in desktop or the server market. I'd really prefer to help the underdog to do my part to keep competition alive, but I need them framez.

Honestly I hope they wait till excavator. Steamroller cores really aren't performing better then their predecessor in computation tasks or even the first gen APU. Gaming and tasks related to HUMA and CPGPU tasks it flourishes but theres really no improvement otherwise. If they go through with the rumored custom/higher quality ALU and FPU units for excavator it might actually compete in the FX line with their competitors.
