Question about Tivo to go

If I have the basic service (free) can I still use Tivo to go?


I have a Toshiba model w/3 days of free programming.

    Nope, you have to be paying for TiVo plus for this to work.

    Ok - I want to sign-up for the Tivo plus, but I can't make up my mind
    on paying $299.00 for lifetime or month to month.

    Two Questions:


    1. Do you think that Tivo is pretty safe from going under or being
    bought out?

    2. If my Tivo breaks then I have to get a new contract right?

    As safe as any succesful small tech company - that is, not safe at all.
    They are a very valuable company and a number of larger companies
    would be glad to buy them up given the right circumstances. Will this
    happen anytime soon? I would guess not. Many have been saying for
    YEARS that TiVo will never last yet they are still going strong,
    continuing to come out with new ideas and building their customer base.
    They need to keep coming out with new products in a timely manner, but
    they haven't given us any reason to think they will fail in this
    regard. The other thought is, even if they do get bought up, that
    doesn't mean your lifetime sub is automatically worthless - it would
    make some sense for the buying company to keep those customers as is.
    There is still value in keeping them, even without charging them a
    monthly fee.

    Or get your TiVo fixed. Most of the common problems aren't too hard to
    fix (bad hard drive or fauly power supply).

    I still have an SA from ~2000 and a DTiVo from ~2002 still working just
    dandy. I got lifetimes on both of them and that has turned out to be a
    very wise decision in deed.

    Another thing is if you do get a lifetime for your SA, it will be much
    more valuable on the market (ebay), even if it breaks. Broken TiVos
    with lifetime subs still sell for high $$$ on ebay.

    TiVo's current revenue is about 5 million a month (my estimate), and their
    day to day running costs are not that high. Somebody will keep the service
    running if TiVo goes under.

    Repair it. Or have somebody repair it. But then my two TiVos have never
    given me any problems, and my lifetime contracts are both paying for
    themselves.

    Nope.
    1) If the unit is repairable, the contract is still valid.
    2) Your contract will be transfered to a replacement TiVo
    if done by an authorized repair service.
