Unable to see ReplayTV on the Network

Hi Everyone:

I switched my ReplayTV to update via the broadband connection. The
ReplayTV connects to a Netgear switch that connects to the Netgear
FR114 wired router. The router is connected to the cable modem.

The router sees the replayTV and the ReplayTV is able to communicate
with the router-no issues. I am trying to locate the ReplayTV on my
network but am unable to do so, no matter what. I can ping it using
its IP (I have assigned it a static IP) and it answers back but I just
cannot seem to get it in the list of networked devices. Am I missing
something? I would eventually like to use DivArchive program to
download shows from the ReplayTV. Any hints would be greatly
appreciated.

    It took me over a month to get it to work. One thing they don't tell
    you is that your firewall needs to pass class D (broadcast) addresses,
    particularly 239.255.255.250. There are NOT internet addresses. but
    LAN only.

    What do you mean "see it"? As in "network neighborhood" on your pc???
    You're not.
    If you can ping it, your network "sees" it. Is it getting guide updates??
    Just install DVArchive and you'll be able to interface with your pc.

    Is that the same as turning on UPnP? My Netgear router has no menu that
    specifically addresses Class D addresses but does allow UPnP to be
    turned turned on. I have it on and can always see my RTV's in the
    Attached Devices list. Note: Static IP devices are not shown in the
    list but work fine nonetheless.

    In Netgear routers there's a screen called "Attached Devices" which
    gives you a list of all DHCP devices currently connected to the router,
    both wired and wireless. Sometimes things don't show up in the list even
    though they are connected and working fine otherwise.

    It can "see" my Replaytv. The Replaytv won't show up in Network Connections
    or Network Neighborhood.

    NO. Turning uPnP on in the router will NOT have any effect on DVA
    operation. That setting allows your router to act as a uPnP device
    (you probably want this OFF). It has nothing to do with devices on
    your LAN (local network) using uPnP with each other. I was referring
    to the firewall software on your computer (the one running DVA). If
    you don't have firewall software, you need it (as I've explained here
    several times).

    And it wouldn't help anyway. Routers should block class D addresses
    (just like they do the class C addresses you use for your devices)
    since they're reserved for LANs. This cannot be changed. There's no
    need to. It's your LAN (local network) that's important here. The
    router has nothing to do with that (other than as a DHCP server, if
    enabled)

    I guess you're talking about the list the DHCP server maintains. They
    will show up here is your Replays are working. However, it would help
    to see if any Replay has requested more than one IP. This is because
    of a bug in the Replay software (also been discussed here). A Replay
    with more than one IP is likely to cause problems with DVA and IVS.

    However, the Replay is buggy and will request a dynamic IP even when
    set to static.

    Linksys has such a list. It is maintained in RAM (in the router), and
    will not include devices that haven't renewed thier lease (such as at
    reboot) since the router was rebooted.

    Reboot the router. The list will now be empty. Then reboot any Replays
    you have (don't reboot any computers). See what's in that list now.

    You can try this even if the Replays are set to static addresses. You
    may be surprised to find some entries in this table.

    Thanks for the explanation - very helpful. I use "address reservation"
    rather than static IP's for my RTV's so no matter how many requests come
    from a given MAC, the IP assigned will always be the same. With this
    feature I've never experienced the IP bug on any of my 6 units. I've
    also noticed that the Netgear router seems to do the address reservation
    by default.

    "address reservation" is also called "static DHCP", complicating web
    searches for it. I turned off my router's DHCP server (this router
    doesn't support address reservation) and installed the program from
    http://ruttkamp.gmxhome.de/dhcpsrv/dhcpsrv.htm which does the same
    thing.

    I think what he is trying to do is locate his replay in "Network
    Neighborhood" on his windows machines.

    The replay will never show up there since it speaks not windows

    You can ping it, and DVArchive (among other programs) can talk to it,
    but Windows won't see it, EVER, simply the way it works

    I have a linux machine on my net that windows can't see too, Sooner or
    later I'll get winbind configured and then windows will be able to see
    the Linux machine, but that's because I'm causing it to show it self. I
    can't do that with the replay... Nor do I have a need to

    though I have never fully understood where exactly you are
    passing/granting etc. I have never had any issues, so I guess it is
    something to keep in my virtual toolbox for another day.

    That sounds like he is looking for his RTV in Network Neighborhood
    (assuming Windows as his OS).

    I suggest if he wants to use DvArchive that he download it and a JRE and
    run it. Once it is running he already knows the IP of his RTV, so if
    DVA and the RTV don't find each other naturally on the network (via UPnP
    - which must not be disabled on either host) -- just key in the ip
    manually.

    Some firewalls will by default pass that address. Some Don't.

    BTW, it took well over a year since I wasn't trying any more after
    numerous failed attempts.

    You're describing the same thing as what happened to me. I turned on the Replay
    and waited for the Welcome Screen and I then connected the network cable into
    the Replay thinking that it would eventually pickup an IP from the DHCP server.
    I went through the initial communication config and I told it to connect via the
    ethernet. As soon as I clicked select, it tried to do it and after two minutes
    it was unsuccessful at getting a connection. I then manually config'd the
    ethernet port by entering the IP, netmask, GW, & DNS. No dice. Wouldn't do it.
    I could ping the Replay at the IP I assinged it but the Replay would not
    connect. Sound familiar???

    I called support. The smart women said.. "yup, been there, done that!". This
    how she got me connected:

    1. Power-down the Replay, Cable modem, router, and wait 60 seconds.
    2. Turn on Cable modem and wait 60 seconds.
    3. Turn on router and wait 60 seconds.
    4. Connect the ethernet cable to the Replay.
    5. Power-on Replay.
    6. Select Ethernet connection and see if you get the DHCP to automatically give
    you an IP(this didn't work for me)
    7. If DHCP didn't work, it will switch to a manual config. Enter in your IP,
    netmask, GW, and DNS. And BOOM! It worked.

    The key is to completely powerdown the Replay and have the ethernet cable hooked
    up before turn on the Replay.

    And don't forget to reset any ethernet switches between the router and
    the Replay. These can cause trouble too.

    So this is a software-based firewall you are running on the same
    computer you attempted to run DVA on? What product was it?
    Do you have fairly restrictive rules in place for your local network, or
    do you "trust it"?

    Does that firewall product have logging? Did it identify a JAVA process
    attempting to send out broadcasts on that address?

    I have the firewalls on all my computers set to pass everything on LAN
    addresses. The problem was that I didn't know about this
    (239.255.255.250) being a LAN address. I do now. The documentation for
    DVA should still say something about that.

    Yes, it can be turned on. The problem is as explained above.
    239.355.255.250 looked like an internet address, and so would be
    undesirable here.

    How do you power down the replay? Holding down the button, mine will
    only reboot. It won't stay off. The only way to power down is to

    In order to turn the Replay COMPLETELY off, you need to unplug it. The
    'power' button is largely a lie.

    Yes, remove the Ethernet cable as well before you power down

    It is possible you can remove the ethernet cable, hold the power switch
    in to force a reset, and then plug the ethernet cable back in.

    For some reason you MUST unplug the network cable adaptor or whatever
    you have pluged into the lan-port
