I'm about to put together my new gaming rig for the next 3-5 years and *wow* am I having a hard time on this one. Aiming for something to play Witcher 3, Star Citizen, Arkham Knight and any other sexy new arrivals on.

By the internet buzz we may see a GTX 880 G1 this year and the extra Vram looks great for future proofing.

On the other hand...my gaming rig is on it's last legs and I'm worried that the wait is not going to be worth it.

So - if you were in my shoes, would you wait a few months for GTX 880 (or at least for more information on it) or would you take the plunge on a 780ti?

My biggest concern is that at 1440p, my 3gb of Vram is just not going to hold up as well as my 580 did over the years with current gen consoles letting devs play with a lot more memory.

Extremely torn - can anyone help me solve my dilemma?

I highly recommend waiting for the 800 series.
Even if you decide you don't need 4GB of VRAM (which will indeed be very helpful for 1440p in the future), the 780ti will drop in price at least a bit after the 880 is released. Definitely wait for the 880, man. I'm getting one myself. :)  It'll only be another 2 months, not 3 or 4!
Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

Wait for 880, no brainer there.

Thanks for the answers.

My concern is though that a lot of the buzz about the 880 is that it may not even be faster than the 780ti, or that we may see the Titan Trick pulled again with a stupendously expensive 'premium' model added or something silly.

The 256bit-bus immediately strikes me as hinky - but then again I am absolutely not an expert.

Ah, the joys of trying to buy a future proof gaming rig :|.

The 256bit bus will be fine, as the new maxwell architecture will work perfectly with it.
It probably won't be faster than the 780ti, but the extra VRAM certainly future proofs it more than a 780ti.

I've heard similar rumors about the GTX 880's performance. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/gtx-880-nvidia-septemb...
$400-450 sounds like 880 will be a direct upgrade to the 780. But who knows what will happen immediately after? For all we know it could launch beside an 880 Ti and/or 890.

As long as you've got something you can game with for the next month (or two [or three]) I'd say wait and see what happens. At worst, you'll be comfortable knowing the 780 Ti is the right call.

Thanks. Good advice.

No worries. Hope we have convinced you to wait for the 880! :D

You've definitely given me a lot to think about. It depends how long before my currently struggling rig goes belly up and I either feel extremely bored or extremely rich ^_^.

Need...880...specs...confirmed...now!

I feel ya man! If I were you, I probably would have already gone for the 780ti, only because I'm impatient.
I know it's a MUCH better idea to wait for the 880 though. :)

Yeah what's holding me back is the fact that while I can afford a 300,000yen PC - it's not something I can afford every year. I tend to buy and ride whatever rig I have for 3-4 years minimum. Hence I tend to be all about future-proofing, which is an obnoxious moving target at all times it seems :|.

I think I may have burned my luck with my 580 - man that was a good buy. Almost 5 years down the line and only now is it starting to run into hassles.

I went for the 780 ti a few months ago because the 780 ti is great and is the sweet spot card for 1440p. Also, I can always get SLI or get the 780 ti 6gb version if it ever comes out. For me, i was going to wait for the price drop but then i realized, I'm buying a 700$ GPU, I don't think I need to save however much the price drop will be.

Thanks. Yeah my hand has been forced - PC died last night, processor and mobo fried. So...780ti it is!
