I would spring for the NVIDIA card (even though the 290 is a great option) because the AMD drivers tend to crash for people using R9 280/X/290/X and the NVIDIA drivers are always very stable (or at least most of the time).

Grab GTX. AMD drivers are AMAZING for lower or mid-end cards but as you go up to the higher cards like the 280 and 290 they seem to become more unstable by what I've seen...

I would go for the nvidia, but from asus or evga. My main advice is to not be impressed by the 3 fan system because it really doesn't keep the card that cool

I would say Sapphire or Gigabyte, not sure if Sapphire is exclusive to AMD though...

Sapphire is only amd atm i pretty sure. My main issue with the gigabyte cards are their volume heat and lengthiness. Their lock speeds are very high though but none of the issues are large enough to completely right it off

Yeah, ASUS has bad VRM problems but it seems like that only effects thier AMD boards. I would agree with EVGA though. The highest rated GPU's from Nvidia are usually swamped with EVGA brand name all over it.

I'd say evga is the best all around. Asus has low clocks but good cooling. Gigabyte has bad cooling but high clocks. Also I found asus customer support to be awful. People really under estimate the value of customer support when buying a card

Well I think 17Seconds has given a pretty much perfect answer as to why the 780 is a better idea than the 290.

The big problem for all those R9-290(x) cards is that AMD was determined to take over the title of "Fastest GPU on the planet" (circa 2013). The only way that it was possible to beat out the GK110 GTX 780 (no "Ti" at that time) was to push the 290s as far as they could go, and then some. As a result, you have cards that run very hot, use a lot of power, and as you can see fail at a significantly higher rate than those 780s. Of course, all Nvidia had to do was polish off its two year old full GK110 chip and release it as a quiet and cool GTX 780 Ti, thus rendering all that effort by AMD for naught.
