should switches be connected with crossover cables?

I know that switches today can be connected with regular (straight through) cables. Is it better to use a crossover cable or does it not make any difference?

I would say check the documentation for your particular switch. You didnt include the make and model for us to check for you.

If it is gig there is no such thing as a crossover cable since it transmits/receives on all 4 pair on both ends. The vast majority of even 100m switches support auto MDI/MDIX so it mostly doesn't matter.

I would just use regular (non crossover) cables to hook up the switch.
