If Japanese laserdiscs have subtitles on them. can they be turned off?

    No, they are not optional, they are part of the picture.

    If you can see them on your U.S. machine, then they can't be turned
    off. The only subtitles that can be turned on and off are closed
    captioning and LD-G. But only certain Japanese players have the
    ability to view LD-G captioning.

    No, because it's part of the video. Laserdiscs do not have an Alpha
    channel for subs in the way that DVDs do.
