i have to laugh at this. there's clinton era laws that mandate the u.s. government has to have access at any time for 'national security purposes'. other governments stipulate to anything on the internet if you want to be online in their country, they have access to what ever they want, or they shut you down or block you, or in some few countries case, they drop bombs on you or guys wearing dark suits or military uniforms show up and you disappear with out a trace. intel chips have had a CPU identifier on them since the debut of pentium 3, and they do report on you to both intel and the governments with access.

Safer is a relative term in this case. Sure they 'might be' keeping your more secure from external threats, but what about intrusions from those internally. Apple, Google, Amazon, and every social media site out there are amassing un-precidentented amounts of data about users. We've already seen that it doesn't take much for these companies to use that data for nefarious reasons...and that likely won't change.
