Download the distro you like (I use linux mint), create a bootable usb (pendrivelinux) for the distro. Boot from usb, try out the distro and if you like it, just click the install icon. The process will give you the option to install by itself (NO NO), or beside your present OS, etc. Choose either beside the existing or "something else". The install process will install GRUB2 (grand unified boot loader), and when complete, your boot screen will offer you a choice of which os to boot.

Current Mint download is HERE and complete install instructions are HERE. Make sure you get the correct version (32 or 64 bit) and choose the desktop version you like (Cinnamon is most like windows).

Again - put it on a usb and play with it for awhile to make sure you like before you install. Try out several different distros/desktops.
