First build ever, got some feedback on parts for a $1,200-1,600 rig, but I was wondering specifically what GPU you guys think would work well with this setup. I'm only running one monitor, though I hope to be able to play most any game with maxed/high settings.

CPU Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core $229.99
Motherboard Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Combo or $139.99
Memory Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 $162.99
Storage Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" SSD $109.99
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM $51.99
Case Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower $137.99
Power Supply SeaSonic 650W ATX12V / EPS12V $59.99
Optical Drive Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer $16.98
Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) Combo or $102.98

Total: $997.89

The R9 280 or the GTX 760.
The R9 270X is a good option too.

I ended up adding the R9 290 to my list for $369.99. Do you think that's overkill?

If you can afford it, is not overkill, it means more time until your next upgrade. In gaming, there is no limit when spending money to the GPU (as long as your CPU is not a potato). You will enjoy the eye candy of AA x16.

Happy fragging.
