In the past I've had some bad luck with Antec PSUs, but I'm aware that the HCG-620M model is frequently recommended. I understand it is the favored Seasonic base, which people dig.

At the moment it is going for about the same price as the Corsair CS650M (which is also somewhat recommended but occasionally derided) and is 80 plus Gold instead of Bronze.

I know the HX650 from Corsair, which is probably a good answer sometimes dip to the same $85-ish, but currently isn't. The RM750 is $90 at the moment, but that's pushing the limit of the budget.

I'm not sure I can wait for a better sale since my PSU burned up today after 4 1/2 years of service (stupid OCZ ModXStream Pro) and I hate being without it.

I understand you don't want to skimp on PSU's, but budget is important to me. I'm trying to keep the price <$90.

System:
FX-8320 (with a light overclock at stock voltage)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0
Gigabyte GTX 660 (factory o/c'd)
8gb Ripjaws X DDR3 1866
2x WD 7200rpm (1TB Black and 500gb Blue)
Five 80mm case fans on a controller
Internal BD Burner
PCI USR fax/modem

Used for some gaming, video encoding, and a bunch of other uses. It logs many hours a day.

For $90,get this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... High quality, very reliable and commonly used PSU. :)
If you dont want that one, then the Antec High Current Gaming 620M OR the Corsair HX650 will do just fine. :)
Hope this helps. :)

I would go with the corsair PSU it is powerful enough to power your components and corsair is a reliable brand as my driend has a build made up almost entirely of corsair

Every one of those 3 PSUs are high quality and very reliable.
I would choose the XFX Core 650W or the Corsair HX650.
Get whichever one is cheaper.

@LukaBoki - There seems to be a lot of love for the XFX supplies. I've researched it but balked for 3 reasons: Not free shipping (which is a rarity for something in that price range), non-modular (I've come to like a neater case, although I suppose I could give it up for the right price), and I've heard bad things about XFX customer service.

Also, if it's so great, why is it only rated Bronze?

@thereachguard - I have no aversion to Corsair. As a brand they are great, with nice customer service.
I recently put a Corsair CX430 in a parental PC just to upgrade a 10+ year old Antec 330w PSU. It was $20 at the time and the PC is used for email and browsing. Seemed like a good replacement.

I'll obviously want a bit better.

XFX Core 650W or Corsair HX650.
Get either one of those and you will be good to go. :)

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/v8CDQ7
According to PCPartPicker, your system consumes 394W.
That means that a 500 or a 550W PSU will be enough.
A great option is a XFX TS 550W. Very reliable, commonly used and a high quality PSU.
August 13, 2014 2:02:45 AM

A couple other PSU calculators I tried came up with 425-475W.
500w could be awfully lean with no room to grow.

The BD burner, fans and fan controller bump the requirement as well.

Then get a Corsair HX650 650W or an XFX Core 650W.
End of the story.

Does XFX make a modular that's still good... and again, if XFX make such good supplies why are they only rated as 'bronze'?

August 13, 2014 10:02:18 AM

"Bronze" isn't really much different that "Gold" Certified.Gold Certified PSUs are only up to 5% more efficient than Bronze Certified PSUs.

I might be wrong, but I don't think that XFX makes modular PSUs. :)

The XFX XTR are based on the Seasonic G series.
August 13, 2014 10:33:29 AM

So much for a budget. :(

Is there anything $85 or LESS that you'd all recommend? Don't get me wrong I've blown 3 Antecs and the OCZ in the last 10-15 years. I'm looking to spend a bit more, but hitting $100 seems unnecessary.

Do most manufacturers figure they only last about a year or two past their warranty?

That said, IF the calculators are to be believed, and my requirement is 450-475w, is 550w safe or is 600w+ a better idea in general, not just if I do something crazy like adding an SSD or second Geforce card?

I noticed that you mentioned the XFX TS 550W, but NewEgg lists two different ones by that name:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

And then... huh, I know less than when I started.
My original question was between the Antec (which even if it's seasonic and recommended by many, I'm wary of because 'Antec') and the CS650M, because it has some good reviews, but people seem to like bashing Corsair. http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Cases-and-Cooling/Corsair-...

XFX TS 550W is a great budget PSU. :)
August 13, 2014 11:01:12 AM

Is the hate across the board for Corsair or just the CX/CS series?

Like I said the RM750 is $90 right now, which is more than I need, but it's as cheap as the 450w right now and has a 5 year warranty. Supposedly as good as the old TX, but that's just words to me.

Still $90 is really more than I'd like, but I always like a really good deal.

And I will repeat the capacity question: How much additional power is a good idea?

RM series uses poor caps.
August 13, 2014 1:36:23 PM

So Corsair HX, XFX, or the Antec(?) No one seemed bullish about the Antec even though it is Seasonic?

The Antec is decent , but the HX and AX are better supplies.

Tell him what PSU you recommend under $90. :p
August 13, 2014 8:34:38 PM

OK, this is in a different price range, but I think it's worth knowing.

I cannot recommend Corsair. I just returned a Corsair RM850 ($160 range). The main power cable was so bad it would latch to neither the power supply nor the motherboard. The CPU cable would not latch on the motherboard end. Their new "plastic" ribbon cables are stiff and difficult to route/hide. I'm sure the power supply itself is a peach, but it's awful with such horrible cabling. I used to be a big fan. I'm no longer a Corsair customer.

@Landstander Get a XFX Core 650W and you will be good to go. :p
The PSU is worth every penny since it's a high quality,a very reliable and commonly used power supply. :)
August 14, 2014 10:05:17 AM

I'm a bit confused by XFX's PSU's rankings.
They seem to have a bottom TS model that the number ends in XXB9.
There is the Pro Series Core Edition and the models end in NLB9.
There are also TS models that end in TS3X but are 80 Plus Gold.

NewEgg also lists a XXBA model that doesn't seem to exist on XFX's website or anywhere else on the net.

Is the Core Edition > Gold TS3X or the other way around? Specs wise I don't even see a difference.

I'd still like to get an XTR modular if I can get a good price. It was mentioned that it is based on the Seasonic G(?)

Are they any good or should I stick with the non-modular?

Finally, how is XFX's customer service. I've heard bad things and a warranty is only as good as the ability to get it fulfilled.

Edit: I'm now also coming across a 550w 'Core Edition(?)' that ends in XXB9, that doesn't seem right.
August 14, 2014 10:24:23 PM

What about a Seasonic PSU directly? Something like the SeaSonic S12II 620 seems to be within budget... or is that a lower grade model?

I'm still without a decision, a PSU, or a clue. I'm more confused than when I started.

Yes.
The Seasonic S12II 620 is a really high quality and a very reliable PSU.
Definitely go with that one. ;)

Have you chosen your PSU?
August 16, 2014 8:02:06 AM

Not yet. I've narrowed it down, but hesitated after I noticed on PCPartPicker that the SSR-650RM from Seasonic had been down to $60 last week.
Mostly deal huntin' right now.

You can get a Rosewill Capstone 650M 650W PSU.Also a great company, great reliability and the same quality made PSU like the Seasonic 650W. ;)
August 16, 2014 11:09:52 AM

Looks pretty good, I'm not familiar with "Superflower" or "Rosewill" for that matter. Are they a good company?
$77 seems awfully cheap for a good modular 650w. (Seems to be Amazon's regular price on it.)

Rosewill is a great company and makes great PSUs.

As you can see,the Rosewill Capstone Series are Tier Two Class A. ;)
All the best.

I can't think of one good reason not to buy that.
650w (I was shooting for 550 to save money), variable fan (good because I need quite in that room), 80 Plus Gold, Modular, 54 Amps, a 7 year warranty and Tier 2.

Freakishly it's $75 at both Amazon and NewEgg right now. I'm uncomfortably unfamiliar with the brand, but I'm prepared to overlook that. I don't think I could do any better under $90.
Thanks, reaching for my credit card now.

Sigh. This is why every time I buy from NewEgg I swear never again...

First of all they ship this crappy UPS to USPS method that takes almost a week because the post office doesn't like delivering UPS packages in a timely manner.

Second:
What I got, the Capstone 650M for a "good" sale price of $76.49

Today's sale (3 days later):
Capstone 750: $60
Capstone 750-M: $80
The price on the 650-M hasn't moved.

So yeah, screwed on the price and I can't bitch about it unless I want to spend another week without a PSU... assuming they're even friendly about a return on something that hasn't been delivered yet. (The PSU 3 days after ordering is STILL sitting at the origin location.)

NewEgg used to be good, now you should just buy from Amazon. Outside of special rebates deal, Amazon usually has the same or better price.
I should have seen it coming.
