Background - I'm an Aerospace Engineering & Physics double major, and a friend of mine mentioned that he wanted to do a side project together. Since he's a programmer and I've been wanting to get into electronics, I mentioned maybe making a USB-interface server from a Raspberry Pi or Arduino (at least for the alpha).

I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but there are certainly gaping holes in my knowledge, as I read/teach myself whatever I know, on a demand-driven basis (if I'm buying a new graphics card, I'll learn all about the new technologies in that sector, etc).

I see tutorials for making ethernet-connected servers, but I'm looking to do something different - to make a device that connects off your PC's USB controller like a thumb drive and runs a server for, say, in-a-snap game servers, or various other applications.

First off, which controller is the best for an application like this? I see the Raspberry Pi B model has 512mb of RAM - which is still questionable for running any useable server - so that gives it a leg up.

Regarding the RAM issue, is there any way for the device to use flash storage to cache to/use as RAM? I doubt it, but boy would that be neat.

I've still got only a fledgling of a clue regarding how servers work, so I'm working on that knowledge as I try to get a start on this project.

Thanks guys.
