Hello

The spec of PC:

Motherboard: GA-X79-UP4
Processor: Intel i7 3930k (6 Core, 12 Threads)
RAM: Corsair Domminator 1833MHz 16GB (2x8GB)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i
Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 LOW PROFILE
Main Drive: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
Dedicated VM Drive for Win2012Server: 750GB Momentus Hybrid
Virtual Machine Drive: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
General Storage: 4TB WD Black
Power Supply: Cooler Master M2 Silent Pro 500w
Case: Corsair 750D
OS: Win 8.1 Pro 64bit

I never plays games wish I had the time though : ) hence the reason I havent got a massive graphics card. Most of the time I do complex labs with GNS3 and VMware. The PC isnt struggling to do any of my labs I simply want to fill the motherboard with good stuff to get the max output. The motherboard supports upto 64GB, 4 channel and I have two sticks installed at the moment, I assume thats one thing im not taking advantage of? If install another 16GB (2x8GB) will that activate the 4 channel or do I need to fill all 8 slots?

What other hardware is available besides RAM? Ive got spare PCIe 8x slots .....

Ive also had a go of overclocking it to 4400Mhz but when ever I do the slightest thing (opening firefox) the fans on the H100i start going for it and its doesnt even stop whilst browsing. Very loud!! So shes back at the default in the BIOS.

BTW Im open to criticism about my overclocking skills lol

Thanks for reading

James

Make your computer entirely solid state, you can also get SSD PCI-Express drives which are faster than SATA SSD's.
You can't really do much to make it faster honestly.

SSD RAID, 2400Mhz CL10~11 RAM. Cant think of anything else that could improve performance. LN2 cooling maybe?

Hi James,

How do you make your PC faster?
That's a very big question, it depends on what you want to speed up. You've got the 3930K and that's a top line product for overclocking. Not a bad motherboard, but it's not top line either like an Asus ROG series. 16GB of RAM is not bad either but it depends on the requirements of your GNS3 and VMware software. I'm running the 32GB of Corsair Quad Domminator RAM and it does not effect the speed of my machine. "Activate the 4 channel?" it's not an, on or off switch, the quad channel memory is a feature of the X79 express chipset. One stick or eight, just keep them all the same (quad channel). I'm using an H80i and it keeps my system below 70C. Make sure you keep all of your drivers up to date and that includes the H100i firmware and link software. The fans are adjustable via the link software, but I use my motherboard's software to control the fans via profiles. I'm running a Asus Sabertooth motherboard, I can run my system on air up to 4.2GHz, and use the H80i for 4.4GHz (and it's a quiet system), going above 4.5GHz requires extensive tweaks to the BIOS firmware. I did notice the speed bump going from stock 3.2GHz to 4.2GHz, unless your doing large renderings or multiple encodes you probably will not see a difference. Gaming is a different world where fps and resolutions play a big part. So if your happy with 4.4GHz, play with the fan profiles. :)

Hello, I went out and bought another 16GB RAM so its got 32GB. Dont really feel any increase in speed which was expected, however I can now have alot more VM's open without it blue screening, which is cool.

Thanks for help everyone.
