I've recently had a massively frustrating time trying to get this picture to work as an avatar.

As you can see it is rather large, but I've never had an issue with that on any site. I frequent sites that allow anything from 50x50 to 200x300 and always had them either resize automatically or let me choose what part of the image I wanted to have shown. Now here at TH I've tried to crop it myself (and it worked) but now it is blurry.
The result after I upload it can be seen to this posts left, whereas this was the original cropped one. As you can see, it's clear but my avatar is not.

Thanks

I can't see any difference either.

Definitely looks identical. But your suggestion has been noted, and it will be forwarded to the dev team. Thanks!

looks identical to me as well and i'm one of the resident graphic artists / photoshop gurus.

TH allows anything under 100x100 size to be used and doesnt scale the images... they appear on screen at whatever size you uploaded. eg, a 100x50 would appear as a rectangle and not stretch to 100x100 size. likewise with an 85x85 appearing smaller than other peoples 100x100.

while i agree an auto-resize tool may be handy please do note that this will also reduce the quality of the image since often they do not do as good of a job as image editors can. i also do not think they play nice with animated gif images. i think it would reduce the quality of avatars overall if it tried to process everything. perhaps if it was a tick mark for an option you can turn off.

Resize should be for anything larger than the allowed dimensions. If smaller, it should be left untouched, or at least give you the option.

Thanks everyone for responding! The image is actually a crop of a resize so I expected some blurring but your observations were correct. It is clear now. It did look like this.
Oh well, it's clear now. :p
