So I've got a brand new build set up. Maximus VII HERO with an i7-4790K, 2x8GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 CL7 RAM, and a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD.
It's my first build and I'm so clueless as to how to use the UEFI BIOS, it took two and a half hours before I finally realized I had accidentally deleted the contents of my boot drive or something like that and had to recopy the boot files for Steam OS back onto the flash drive.
After finally installing Steam OS and entering the desktop for the very very first time (I assume it logged me into the default account, there was no prompt and an account called Steam prevents me from demounting USB drives) it gave me the prompt that there's no Internet to install Steam with. Okay, no problem, I guess my PCI-E wireless adapter isn't activated yet as I don't see any lights on it, so just pop in the Ethernet cable, watch the lights flicker.... But Steam OS won't recognize the wired connection. The connection's there, or so the motherboard seems to think, as the flickering lights on the I/O shield at the Ethernet connector seem to be mimicking the flickering lights on my router and based on the motherboard's manual the ethernet connector detects a 100MBPS connection. I go to Network Settings and notice that the switch in that panel is set to "Off". Hey, that must be the problem, right? No... it actually reverts itself back to off... There shouldn't be an issue with the router, I used my laptop wired in the same port and it accessed the Internet just fine. I tried to manually set up the wired connection but what I saw in the setup panel didn't match what was in the readme and help files I could find. I don't have an optical drive and I'd rather not get one, as the build still needs a few parts and there are more important assets I need to focus on right now if I can get away with it. I did, however, take all the files off of the included driver CD for the Asus PCE-N15 wireless adapter and copy them to a USB drive. Too bad I have no idea how to use them in Linux, there doesn't seem to be anything that can run the setup or autorun files out of the box.
So... now what?
