After 10 years of owning my Logitech Z680 speakers I am planning to get a new system. One of the channels, rear left, stopped working a few years ago and it is about time. Right now I am looking at the Logitech Z906 system and it appears to do everything I need (basically an updated version of the Z680) but I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations for a "better" set at roughly the same pricepoint, $300 usd.

Basically I need 5.1 with good bass and capable of accepting RCA, 3.5mm and optical inputs. I know I could run through a standard 5.1 receiver and get all that functionality, but I don't really want to go the home theater route, that is impractical for this room.

the monoprice 9774 ($250) is an offbrand copy of the well known and respected speaker set the energy take classic 5.1 ($350) and certainly worth a look. if you can get a good deal on a receiver then we arent talking a whole lot more money then the z906 will cost you on average (which is about $330) for a home theater set which will be better off in terms of sound quality than the z906.

of course i made note that you would rather not go with a home theater, however in the budget range of the z906 it must be listed since when you start talking about $300-400 it does make quite a bit of sense. the best pc speakers would be home theater speakers. while it might seem a bit impractical... i run my hifi in a 14x15 sized room and the difference from regular pc speakers is quite apparent. your choice though.

if however you absolutely want to avoid home theater systems completely then your choice of going with the z906 is going to be one of the better "computer speaker" options that you have available in 5.1 and is likely what you should go with if that is the case. logitech quality is generally fairly good, sound is about middle of the road for the price and they are capable of loud volumes and fairly deep bass. overall a good choice if that is what you want.
