My laptop has two RAM slots. I have 4GB (2GB+2GB).
I have a spare 4GB stick.
Is 6GB(4GB+2GB) worth it, in spite of the fact that it won't be able to use dual-channel (from what I gather)?
If you have a 64bit OS, give it a try, the extra DRAM will help, and if the laptop is reasonably recent, and the sticks play, will prob result in 4GB in dual channel and the odd 2 running in single (called flex mode)

I didn't know dual-channel could work like that. And yes, I have a 64bit OS.
And what do you say about consistency being better, like turkey3_scratch said?
Ideally you want a matched set, i.e. I don't recommend buying DRAM with the intent of mixing it because it may not work, but if you already have it, it's worth giving it a try, if they play nice (no BSODs or other problems) it can be a bonus and the extra DRAM can speed things up
