Hi guys ,

So I've been using the standard wireless router that came with the internet provider company , I mostly online game or watch streams or stream myself . And Im using the Ethernet cable for my pc . But I've got a macbook and my phone as well as my sister's macbook and phone and ipad that is connected to the same wifi. So does that matter at all using the standard router or should I consider getting a different one , and which one to look for ?

and yea I have a connection speed of 15 - 20Mb download.

Your ISP's wifi router, is it built into the modem (where the cable comes in) or a standalone device? Typically the built in router/modems have lower performance and usually have firmware problems resulting in loss of connection. Ideally, you should get your own. At 15-20mbps downstream, any recent wifi band will be appropriate. You can always connect the devices and run some tests to see if the router is slowing you down :p !

Are you having any problems with your Wifi currently? I would not spend any money to fix a problem that does not exist if you are fine with the current wireless.

It is an all in one device but as abailey said, if it is working well currently, why add a router? Personally, I don't trust the all in one devices but that is from my own evil experiences :p . I'd leave it as-is so long as performance is not degraded or people have trouble connecting. :)

Well , to be honest its only good when its used in the same room for the wifi , I cant really use any other device from a different room that is kinda of behind closed doors . But since my pc is connected through ethernet , I didnt face any problems with it .

So there is a problem with range/connectivity. What kind of a budget do you have for a router (they range from 30$ to over 300$)? There are MANY good models to choose from. A budget is a good way to narrow it down.

I mean to be fair its only for average home usage purposes( gaming , streaming , watching vids etc.. ) , as u said its probably just the range that gives the bad experience, would 30-40$ solve this issue ?

For basic networking, any of these would be a very basic solution. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100010076%204025&IsNodeId=1&page=2&bop=And&CompareItemList=145%7C33-320-168%5E33-320-168-TS%2C33-704-150%5E33-704-150-TS%2C33-704-030%5E33-704-030-TS&percm=33-704-030%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24

They should be able to cover a small - average sized house.

I would personally recommend something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215&ignorebbr=1

That is what I use at home and it covers 3 floors, the deck, patio, driveway, and yard with 3 bars. Our neighbors get 2 bars :p

No problem! If you have any other questions you have found the best place on the web to ask them :D . Be sure to mark a correct answer and set the thread to solved for the archive.

Good luck and have fun
