What would you get if you could, a GTX LIGHTNING or a G5X 780ti?

So, Im in LOVE with MSI, and I just heard about the msi gtx 780 LIGHTNING (EHRMAHGAWD) and it is on TITAN level (with and wihout oc) but what I am very concerned about is if my PSU will be able to handle all that extra power consumption. This is my already completed build, and I plan to upgrade and give my 760 to a friend for his future build.

Hi,
get at least a 750w PSU if you want to overclock that 780lightning to the max. Otherwise I think 650w PSU is good enough. Just get one of the good ones (80+ gold) and Tier one PSUs.

Good luck.

He has a 600w PSU, would that be fine also? This is his setup currently:

i have suicide benchmark ran my 780 at 1375mhz@1.275v on the core 100% fan speed and didnt trip the ocp on my 2x25amp rails 600w power supply. this is also with my 2500k@4.5ghz. at this speed the 780 is far past any out the box 780ti performance levels. you can roughly figure the 780 needs to be 200mhz ahead of a 780ti to equal the performance. so a 780@1200mhz is roughly equal to the 780ti@1000mhz.

the evga 600b is an ok power supply, nowhere near the best but its not a horrible power supply and it has all the built in protections. you shouldn't have any problems running the 780 lightning, even with a very high overclock.

The release date of the GTX 980 is supposedly September 19th.

Hi,

that should be good enough, if running stock settings.

Good luck.
