Opinions and personal experiences on my career aspirations?

To make an incredibly long story short, over the last year or so I've come to the realization that my line of work is far from what I desire in life. I've always felt selfish saying or even feeling things a long those lines, so I've just stuck with what I do and haven't given much thought to furthering my goals. I've come to the conclusion that I'd like to go to school and gain some variety of degree. I've no idea where and what to major in, but my passion is derived purely from computers, hardware and other things of that nature. If I could think of something I'd never become bored of, it'd be something in that realm.

What really got me questioning whether or not I was happy, was finally meeting someone in my current town that runs a small scale PC repair shop. He builds lots of gaming rigs, and sells them on craigslist & ebay. Sometimes a bit overpriced for what you're getting, but I'd say that's just the name of the game. But still cheaper than buying a custom built rig from big name dealers like falcon or alienware. I've met him, spoken with him, seen his set-up working from home. I've only become increasingly envious of his career, more and more. I feel kind of silly, cause I know not everyone can be so lucky. Not that he probably thinks he's lucky. He'd tell you he just barely skates by like anyone in their own small business. I just know I'd truly be happy. Besides, where money is concerned my girlfriend will be doing far more than pulling her own weight.

I plan to speak with him some more, but with the idea of getting his opinions and asking him what if any degrees he pursued. So I'm first posing the same question to this community, as it's the finest I've seen online for this genre of fun~

How many of you work in fields that have to do with our enthusiast hobby? Have any of you had similar feelings to mine? What sort of steps did you take as far as schooling goes? Anything would be helpful and endlessly appreciated.

Thanks
Sammy

your friend can't be too happy if he needs his girlfriend to support more than her fair share. the computer building/selling line isn't as lucrative as one might think.....ANYBODY can build a computer....... school.......... learn blender or something similar.......... get into 3d printing......... lots of future for the right person making/designing the right products. you have to learn the software.

service jobs.......... some might not pay great but you'll find work here and there and it pays better than walmart or burger king.

you will find as time goes on............. yu will have 20 careers" as your life goes on. nothing can be more true now because nobody hires and keeps employees forever............. look at what microsoft just did. got rid of a lot of dead weight.......... people with health problems/family with health problems ( high risk for a company ) people who know what they are worth and demand a decent wage for it...... people who know what a vacation is and expect not to be worked to death.............. people who want benefits................. after the lay off these microsoft twerks want to bring in cheap out sourced labor who work for peanuts and no benefits because they don't have the employees to get them where they want to go............. NOTHING is written in stone.

if your girlfriend wants to support you, you better marry her before she smartens up.

Are you aware if most companies do internships/apprenticeships without the intern being in school? I'll not be starting in school for computer networking, until next august. However, I'd like to intern at a repair shop in the meantime. Do you have any experience with this?
