I am saying this because I had a laptop that died in the first 6 months from a motherboard failure. Then another 6 months later my video card died. At the time when I had my laptop I never thought of dust being the cause. After doing research I started cleaning it out every couple weeks then it last 2 years from doing that. Was that really the culprit.

The computer was a compaq presario with
AMD V-Series V120 Processor (2.2GHz)
2GB installed memory-320GB Hard Drive
15.6" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
SuperMulti 8X DVD+-R/RW, WiFi

Not enough information to tell but let me ask you this. Did you notice that your laptop get hot often? If it gets really hot for a long time, the lifespan of the components in your computer decrease.

This can happen for a number of reasons. Dust can be bad but only if it gets to the fan. Most laptops are good enough to get rid of the dust that builds up.Rather than me guessing why I will ask a few questions:

1. Did your laptop get hot while it was idle or in standby? If so then it is most likely due to dust or the way in which you put the laptop. For example was the fan grills covered?

2. DId it get hot while doing basic tasks? If so then it is likely your processor unclocking as it can't maintain its turbo.

3. Did it get hot while doing graphical intensive tasks like video editing or gaming? If so then it is you gpu not being able to cool itself from the fan
