Another 7950/R9 280 or a 7970 / R9 280x.

would you recommend having a crossfire tho? i read a lot of comments about not xfiring the 7950 anymore since this will have little effect on the performance.

can i have your insight?

I would always say get the most powerful single card possible-not all games support xfire and those that do, only a few do it WELL. Therefore, it may not be worth the investment, but it all depends on the games you play. Some handle it better than others.

If you can, I would suggest selling your GPU and buying a more powerful single card (depending on if your system can support it) such as the r9 290x or gtx 780ti.

It can work well, but sometimes it can cause issues too. A single more powerful GPU can be less hassle.
