Hi all, looking for some advice.

I have been holding off for the 5960X for two years but can't wait any longer. Need a computer!

However several tech items I need for my build are not currently avilable (980 GTX, Windows 9, Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD and DDR4 3600+) but should be in a few months.

Currently have a 150GB WD Raptor, Windows XP, and an old 8800 GTS, 1600w PSU, Watercooling with LGA 2011 block, and supertower.

I am looking to buy a 5960X and an X99 Board with as little other componets as possible and install my desired components and software as they become avilable.

So here are the questions:
Can you run a quad channel board on a single stick of cheap 4GB DDR4? (I know it sounds dumb but I just need to have a functional system until I drop a full load on a significatin ammount of DDR4 when the prices come down and better sticks are avilable.

Also don't want to force Win8 on myslef when Win9 is just around the corner. Would XP as a stop gap have an issues running on X99/DDR4 hardware? Tried google and nothing.

Thanks

Honestly it sounds like a bad idea, building a "temporary build" for a month of two, all the issues you'll get with using old windows on brand new hardware, especially DDR4, only using 4GB RAM, using the old GPU.

Don't think it would top your current build by much because of all the limitations, therefore i would recommend you to just wait and buy everything at once.
For the GPU, GTX8xx haven't even released yet? There's not any real reason to wait for the 9xx series if your current gpu needs replacing, which i assume since it would be quite an awkward build with a 8800GTS and a i7-5960X paired together.

If you don't have the money for the system why go for parts so performance/dollar inefficient? The i7-5820K is cheap and as fast as the older extreme series, it would allow you to obtain your fully built setup much faster (though still wait until important stuff like win9 have released).

Hope this was somewhat helpful for you ;)

EDIT: You can wait in eternity for new hardware, always just buy what's currently available or only wait a few months if something new is to soon be released.

980 GTX - is releasing this week.
Windows 9 - should be announced this month with the tech preview hopefully available soon.
Samsung SM951 - Release date "soon" whatever that means.
Avexir is promising 3400 MHz DDR4 memory - Release date "soon"

My main reason I wanted to build ASAP is my main computer died and I am running on a netbook that can't even stream video. It's painful to use so anything would be an improvement.

By the look of things everything I need should be available by the holidays and might be able to score some deals on Cyber Monday. Configuration is locked in for me.

Just have to play the waiting game now  also none of the X99 boards even have drivers for XP anymore. Guess I am being forced into the modern world. Going from one of the sloest computers on the planet to a top end build is going to be a little shocking.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah i understand, I was using a old dual-core low res laptop myself before changing to custom built, what a change.
Also didn't know gpu companies skipped yet another series... I was actually also looking into buying the next GTX880/GTX980 myself though forgot all about release.

If this was the old gen CPU's then i would spam this post untill you changed for the i7-4930K because the xtreme i7 is so overpriced, though i get you on this one because this is actually the first 8-core i7 and is probably kicking ass compared to any other ;)

For the DDR4, if possible, then buy two sticks / half the amount you want, then buy another kit and use them in quad-channel? This is just a thought.

"soon" could still mean quite some time, and for the M.2 SSD, I've just read this in an article:
"Similar to the XP941, the SM951 is unfortunately an OEM-only product but it is possible that third party resellers will carry the drive like what happened with the XP941." -AnandTech
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8236/samsung-ssd-global-s...
You should install OS on another drive if you can't get a M.2 SSD when every other part is in store. Then re-install windows when you get a M.2 SSD, though i did this from my 2TB HDD to a 128GB SSD and it was kind of a mess to do and a mess afterwards, would just mention that.

Nevertheless, i'll go hunt for info on the GTX980 now, have a nice day! ;)

Actually just picked up a 5960X so there is no going back now. As for DDR4 everything is sold out so I am not the only one who has to wait haha I'll get by with my raptor until the new gen of M2 SSDs come out. For another $500 I can have a system that is up and running. Good luck on the GTX980, should know by Friday if it is any good.

Are you me? I am im the same exact shoes as you. already ordered the 5960x, motherboard soon (cant decide rampage vs deluxe... i see no reason to get the rampage? other than bragging)

Now im waiting for all the chips to fall on the 980 OC gpus. Waiting on high clock DDR4 availabilty, waiting on SM951.... the list goes on.

If all my hardware is purchased and to me before windows 9 drops... ill install windows 8 with a license i already own and upgrade later.

All this waiting is killing me. I feel your feels

System is up and running! 8 Cores running stable at 4.5Ghz and will keep moving it up.

I am able to 25k+ in 3Dmark11 and 21K+ Firestrike - Amazing, Better than Titan Black SLI, Titan Z, and the 295X2. Still have room to work. Only running two cheap sticks of 4GB 2133 (Should be able to OC to 2600), not even quad channel. Next year I'll upgrade to Windows 10, M.2 X4 PCIE SSD, and hopefully 64GB+ of DDR4 3600+ along with two more 980 GTX cards. Should see a huge performance boost. I can already run every game out in 1920x1200 ultra with no problem. :o

Now I just need to decide on displays..... Thanks for the input.

What are you using for CPU cooling? i went with noctura d15.

asus deluxe and gskills ddr4 3000 will be on my doorstep today. I'm going to likely build it this weekend. reuse case, 850w PSU, sata SSD, GPU etc from previous build.

I'll be waiting for xmas hoping a new GPU drops (980ti?), even if it doesn't I will get something. And i will wait for windows 10 to purchase whatever the best available m.2 SSD is at that time.

I almost want to bite the bullet at get the 980 now... but i know by xmas ill be regretting it, I'm not a huge fan of SLI...

I'm also waiting for the 4k monitor of my dreams to come along, I want something around 40"

This build screams 4K display in my face, and triple 4K when you get the extra 980's...

Doen't the mobo have a max speed for DDR4?
Even the ASUS DELUXE caps out at 3200mhz(OC) the high-end MSI boards at 3333mhz(OC) and the ASUS RAMPAGE at 3300mhz(OC) so you might not be able to run your memory at 3600mhz or higher.

Update. By a twist of fate a legitimate NEED came up for the reused components i was going to use in this build. So i went ahead and purchased the xp941 512GB and TWO! EVGA 980 SCs. Compulsive I know...

Running a custom setup with a 360~ rad. Most of the mobos will likely support above what they currently state. Many show 3300+ or 3333+. They will add support and update the BIOS once higher speed become available.

How do you like the XP941?

I just got my tracking number from newegg about 20 minutes ago, took them almost 24 hours to ship...., ill have the XP941 friday. I'm hoping to build this weekend, assuming I don't work. Worked 97hours last week(gotta pay for these toys hehe) and not sure what this weekend has in store. I'll let you know how it goes when I finally build it.

Ugh, reading through the manual on my X99 board if I go 3-Way or 4-Way SLI in the future it will kick down the M.2 connection from PICE 3.0x4 (32Gb/s) to PCIE 2.0x2 (8Gb/s)! That sucks, almost no point, might as well settle for the XP941.

M.2 PCIE (2.0x2) 1000 MB/s (8Gb/s)
M.2 PCIE (2.0x4) 2000 MB/s (16Gb/s)
M.2 PCIE (3.0X2) 2000 MB/s (16Gb/s)
M.2 PCIE (3.0X4) Ultra 4000 MB/s (32Gb/s)

XP941 1170 MB/s Read
SM951 1600 MB/s Read

Actually, from my understanding PCIEX4_5 slot runs at 8x only if M.2 socket is disabled. If m.2 socket is enabled they each run at 4x, never 2x for either

The PCIEX4_1 which can hold an M.2 expansion card shares bandwidth with SATAExpress_E1 and USB3_E12, You can ONLY use either PCIEX4_1 OR SATAExpress_E1, not both. If you use USB3_E12 then PCIEX4_1 will be 2x.

in Neither case is the M.2 effected by SLI. Unless I'm missing something of coarse.

If you want PCIEX4_5 at 8x for 3way SLI just use PCIEX4_1 for your M.2. Problem solved.

God knows when SM951 will be available, what it will cost, and will you even tell the difference. I just said screw it im building with the best parts i can currently get.

I still havent had the chance to build... i got a small start and have 3 fans mounted and the screws for the Mobo in lol. I was all set to finish tonight, but i have to work late again. I have a USB in my pocket with 1.3GB of driver updates... OMG im so ready to do this already lol.

Hope you are right!

My WD Raptor was having boot issues yesterday so I decided to bite the bullet and get a 1TB 850 PRO. Should be just a little slower than your XP941. I'll hold off on the M.2 until more product comes out to take full advantage. Then I'll pick up more 850 Pros in a year or to for RAID 0/1, prices should be good by then. Don't think I'll buy another mechanical drive ever again.

This will be the first time I have used an SSD to I feel anything would be a huge upgrade for me. Excited like you are!

My 150GB Raptor is almost full just from installing the OS and one game....

Build is mostly done. Havent got it dialed in yet. intel RST wont intall? Got 1022 Read 884.9 Write with CrystalDiskMark

3dmark Firestrike = 19349 with everthing at stock except DDR4 is up to XMP profile (3000)

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4312221

I cant wait till i have some time to really tune this beast up and put it to some real tests.
less than a minute ago

Very nice, that is some nice speed. Everything is working well for me as well, have not benched the 850 Pro yet but its fast! Only limit is the interface :(

Still torn between G-Sync 4K,Curved Ultrawide or Surround. Should have several monitors coming out this fall for the34" Curved Ultrawide DELL, Samsung, and LG. It's tempting....
