I currently own a Radeon 7970 but am looking to upgrade to a new GPU.
I have been looking at the Radeon R290 which is around the £299.99 mark. From what I can tell from the benchmarks is that it keeps up with a lot of the much higher priced Nvidia cards and also has 4GB Vram.
At the moment as well there is an offer where you get Alien: Isolation with a purchase of an AMD GPU and that game I was going to get anyway.

On the other hand I really want to try an Nvidia card because I love what I see with Physx and also that I am currently using an Nvidia 3D enabled monitor. From what I gather when I play my games 9 out of 10 times the games I play have the "better on Nvidia" splash at the beginning. Probably meaning they are better optimised for Nvidia?. The main issue I have with Nvidia is that you pay what seems £50 - £100 more for a card of the same power.
Nvidia seem to come out with drivers more quickly it seems, since the last certified AMD driver released was 14.4.
I also heard that Nvidia are going to roll out new GTX 900 series gpu's towards the end of the year that utilise 4GB Vram, not sure whether I should wait for them either.

Any help would be great!

Current Specs:

Radeon 7970
FX 8350 @ stock
16GB Hyper x Genesis 1600MHZ
Windows 7 64 bit

If your monitor is 1080p, I would recommend waiting. See if prices go down on the gtx 780ti with the 9xx 's coming out. Your 7970 is still a very good card to jump to a 290 or 780 in my opinion. The 290x and 780ti are not as good a value from a 7970.
