im seeking the wise words of the forum today. I am building a mid budget rig in about a month and need a little help on the final gpu decision. First let me say that my cpu is an fx 6300 and that being said i dont want my budget going higher than 750$. i did own a rig that i sold back in june that i saw was to overkill for what i do which is just game at 1080p on a 60hz monitor, so i built a 1100$ system. I had a gpu in it which i was very happy with, it was a power color r9 270x devil. I loved the cards' performance at near maxed settings on the res i have. but everything else in that system was overkill cause i fell into the trap that my intel overkill fanboy bestie got me into lol. so what i was wondering if i should go with the same gpu or go for the r9 285 for just 20$ for a 30% increase? or will my cpu bottleneck it? or is it overkill for what kind of gaming i do and i also dont mind turning down to med graphics in upcoming games if i have to.

First of all man, what is overkill to you?

Gaming BF4 in ultra with stable 60FPS? If this is overkill to you don`t go for R9 285 or R9 280.

You better have the 750ti or the R7 260.

well overkill to me is what my friends system is. he has an i7 4770k with gtx 770 in sli and only plays games as well at 1080p. im asking should i go for the 285 seeing that the performance is somewhere between the 270x and the 280x, or should i save the extra 20$ and stay with the 270x which did fine with me. in the long run what would be a better investment bc i seen where the fx 6300 cpu hold back some of the higher cards than the 270x

If you play BF4 mainly then yes the cpu will bottleneck as it's a cpu hungry game. And I'd go with the 270x and upgrade the CPU, and when your performance isn't satisfying for you just add another 270x and you'd be good to go.

PS. a Single 270x can max out bf4 and it will give you 40-60 fps with AA off with ultra @ 1080p.

If you want to max it out now, you can get the 280 or the 280x and upgrade the cpu later :)

i may put in about 2 hours of gamplay of bf4 a week and i never turn on aa in the shooters cause i know its a card life reducer in some cases. im just wondering if i would be better in in the long run going with the r9 285 for future game releases or stick with the 270x. plus i will only push games to between med to high settings cause i care more for performance than looks. plus if i upgrade to the fx 8320 can i keep it on the 970 chipset instead of the 990fx cause i dont overclock and the 970 mobo's are much lower in price.

I don't think the AA reduces the gpu's life. But if you want to play on medium to high with no AA then the 270x would more than enough, alongside with the fx 6300.

If you intend to upgrade the cpu then yes you can use the 970 chipset and you still can do overclocks on it.

ok thanks for all the input guys. i will stick to the 270x fx 6300 since it dont break my 750$ price mark.
