Hey guys, I'm messing around in PC part picker, and I was wondering if you guys like my idea for a steam machine. At about 1K, the goal of this machine is to bring steam OS to the tv and make it as much like a console, without compromising important PC features. Give me your opinion and tell me what you would change.

Also, do you guys think anything will actually come out of steam OS? Will it catch on?

Honestly I feel like the Steam OS is a joke for the most part. Sure it would be good for those that want to save a bit on operating system costs...but the fact that the Steam OS will not play all Steam games, it is just not worth it. The Steam OS being free will of course help some choose it for dual boot systems if they just want the ease of it at times, or maybe even for a living room console. But simply put, other versions of Linux can do the same and more for free also. And Windows OS can do more than the Steam OS and Linux in terms of gaming since some games are still only made for Windows OS.

The fact that there are tons of Steam machines that are being hyped up right now...and most of which costs just like a normal PC...it is pretty sad. I don't know of people that want to pay the same for less worth.

Thank you for your reply! Well at least Steam OS isn't out completely yet. I really want to root for it but I get your point. I see people on the internet make pretty nice ones for just a little bit more money than consoles. Mine was so expensive because of all the things I added extra I didn't really need.

The thing about making one for a little bit more than the cost of a console...it is still just a PC with just a different OS..and that is where I see the problem. I do think that Steam OS almost has a place for those that want a console interface and nothing more for free. And it may cause game developers to think twice about how they code games, maybe starting to include the Steam OS/Linux in more releases. I understand people think of it as just plug and play with no updates....or at least updates setup more like the consoles...and the ability to upgrade. I can only hope that it gets enough attention to impact console sales and development...but that won't happen.

Looks good in terms of hardware. Probably will be GPU limited and not CPU. My steam box is patched together with old parts Phenom II x4 with 4 gig of ddr2 and a HD 6570. Its enough to play everything ok on my 720p TV. I like it and it has its place but it is still dual booted with ubuntu to watch netflix and amazon prime. I'm holding out for a steam controller. Personally 1K$ is to much for me to spend on a dedicated steam box especially since the steam streaming seems to be coming along nicely. If it were me would cut the budget to 500-600$ and spend the remainder on a high end graphics card for my desktop system that will stream the game to the console.
